E55k
Just collected a E55k (2004) last night , came to start this morning , and flat battery !! message reading " covenience functions unavailable"Phoned previous owner and he said he hadnt had any problems since RAC fitted a battery 6 weeks ago. Problem is the battery is a standard 017 lead battery , 900amp , am i right in thinking an AGM battery is the correct spec and would changing the auxillary battery make any difference. Got the current battery on 24hr trickle charge , but not holding out much hope.

Welcome to the forum:thumb:

Yes an AGM battery should be fitted to an E55, but I doubt that is the reason a 6 week old battery is totally flat. If the aux battery in the engine bay isn't holding any charge, that won't be helping. It sounds like you may have a drain on the battery.
After a few hours there will be enough in the battery to start the car, but until you find the source of the drain you will have problems.

My battery was new around Oct last year, but I still get the Consumers off message if I don't use the car for 3 or 4 days. I'll probably get an auto electrician to go through the car to try and find what is draining it.

thanks for the reply , having only just bought the car , i will see how the fully charged battery fares. The previous owner only covered 3,000 miles in 2 years , so hopefully regular use will solve the problem , if the battery does go flat with regular use , you are quite correct , a drain would be a definite possibility , but with so many gizmos on the W211 , i wouldnt know where to start. Maybe you could help clarify what the auxillary battery actually does , i have heard different views , one view is its sole purpose is to back up the SBC pump , others say it supplies power to , keyless go etc .

I have read so many different opinions on what function the aux battery does I've given up trying to understand. It even varies depending on the model.
Someone will come up with it hopefully.

I know that aux battery has to be in good condition for SBC hold to function in case main battery fails, but not sure it actually gets used for that.

I had a lead acid battery in mine for a few months and it was fine other than if I sat with ignition on for a long time without engine running it would disable convenience functions but it always started the car OK.

My understanding was the aux was simply run in parallel and acted as a backup if the main battery failed...

Sod knows though as I've read many views on it.

I only recently replaced my alternator - mine is a 10/04 and on 87k now...

update

update on the flat battery , after a full 24 hour trickle charge , car started fine with no issues ,ran the car all day covered around 200 miles , then took it to local battery specialist and he said it was only approx 60% charged and he advised replacement(alternator giving a steady 14.2 volts). Left the car overnight and hey presto , flat battery again , going for a Varta AGM battery , and will replace the auxilllary with a exide YTx-14BS AGM , which is identical spec to mercedes auxillary , but half the price. If the new batteries dont cure the problem , i have got a serious drain issue on the car , and thats is when it will get messy :(

new battery

fitted new varta AGM main battery and exide AGM for the SBC pump for the last few days the car is running/starting fine voltmeter reading at 14.2v , also disconnected cd changer which was constantly clicking and trying to open the cd door , and everything appears to be ok. Now beginning to enjoy the car without the nagging doubt of not starting and leaving me stranded , AND WHAT A CAR , used to think my W210 E55 was a beast , but this car is ridiculously quick :eek:and after coming from an E46 M3 , quite refined.

Pretty swift aren't they:bannana: To see the traction light still flickering at 80 in 2nd just before it changes up makes you really appreciate an E55.
God knows what will replace this when the time comes. A 5.5tt would be very nice but out of my league at the moment.

Glad to hear a battery change has resolved your problems.

I had the same issue, I changed the Aux battery and touch wood all has been good ;)
