1999 C180 Estate
Hi guys,

sorry if this is in the wrong place, new to this forum and new to Mercedes ownership.

i have just purchased my 1st MB, its a 1990 C180 estate, 1.8 petrol auto.

its a classic model, has air con, fog lights front & rear, cruise control, electric windows all round. Which i believe are optional extras on this particular model. (may have missed a few things)

its has 89k on the clock, with a full MB main dealership service history. Only 2 owners from new, Drives and looks lovely.

looking for some advice on the bad points.....

1 - there's a slight knocking noise coming from passenger side front wheel area
2 - airbag light & SRS light comes up on dashboard (not every time its started) when it does come on it normally goes back off after a few miles.
3 - brakes make the odd creaking noise (what i imagine is age related?) also handbrake release is noisy
4 - rear passenger window doesn't work
5 - air con doesn't work (previous owner advise it was re gassed and still didn't work)
6 - rust bubbles around rear number plate/lock
7 - last MOT advisory was discoulered indicators
8 - slight 'strange' noise when locking with the central locking

points 4 & 5 were made very clear by the previous owner before i purchased, but at the price i couldn't leave it there.

any help with the above points would be really appreciated? And any other general things that may be likely to bother me.

Planning on a few minor changes, AMG monoblock alloys, maybe a few other things but cosmetically (apart from the slight rust) the car is lovely.

planning on taking the car at least to 150k miles, and wanting a reliable daily drive.

thanks in advance
Rhys

1. Mercedes seem to eat Ball joints and drop links. Neither are expensive. Should not take a garage two minutes to diagnose with a pry bar.
2. Check the connections under the seat.
3. not sure. Handbrake release is usually a bang. I often forget to use mine.
4. not a clue.
5. If the AC cuts out it often needs to be reset after a top-up. Needs to be done by a STAR (computer) equipped dealer/specialist. Could also be a sensor or leak - they should be able to tell at the same time.
6. Par for the course. Expect more.
7. First time I've heard of that.
8. Central locking is vacuum related. noise might be normal or a leak.

and welcome.

Thanks mate,

are there any issues that im likely to come up against more commonly?

i was also thinking of some sort of paint job (expensive i know) but will that clear up the rust problem? If its treated properly of course.

Thanks again

Rust is always the biggy. I'm not sure whether it's worth the big respray or just touching up as necessary.

I've little experience on the C so not sure what's common and what is not.

Thanks alot, appreciate the help

a 1990 C-Class:dk:...i don't think so, production of the C-Class W202 started in 1993...

pretty sure the front has been replaced in the last 3 years, although the back spray has stopped (wiper is ok) is that anything to worry about?

I would not think so might be blocked...have you checked water bottle is full?

yeah bottle is full. Front is working fine, unless there's a seperate bottle for the rear that im missing?

what's the easiest way to find and sort a block?

Yes rear washer bottle is in the rear, open the tailgate look left you will see a compartment
wit a medical+ on it,it's in there.

i thought that controlled both front and back, couldn't see any under the bonnet. The one in the back is full. Amy ideas? I know its not exactly important but as a daily drive in looking to put it all back working
