New to me S212 2010 E350cdi BlueEff Sport

How does the Op rate the 212 over the 211 out of interest?

The reason i say this is because the even later 350s ( called bluetec i think) are rated at 254 bhp and 457lb ft. It looks as though the power rating was actually decreased at some point presumably in 2014 time.
The BlueTEC and BlueEfficiency models used to co-exist, the former being an EU6 emissions compliant model that uses AdBlue. The BlueEfficiency engine was only EU5 compliant and never used AdBlue.

The BlueTEC was originally 211bhp (ran concurrently with both the 231bhp and 265bhp BlueEfficiency model) and the 265bhp BlueEfficiency model was dropped when EU6 became mandatory. I think that's when the BlueTEC power output was upped to 254bhp.

Seems like I'm going to need a remap then. Can anyone tell me the safe torque limit for the 7g box?

Thanks

Jon

The Brabus D6 box is very impressive.

I had the D6 on my 211 and a remap on my 231hp 212, the D6 was the better of the two.

265bhp/7G+ W212's were first delivered late 2011 (61 plate).

Ok, so maybe mine was 265bhp (as mentioned on the reg doc) but only 7G, not 7G+ perhaps? Not sure how to tell. It's a late 2010 (60 plate), CO2 rating of 171 g/km if that helps (it's an estate).

With regard to the Brabus D6 chip (which mine had fitted before I bought it), I've not driven a standard E350 for any significant period to make a very scientific comparison, but I think it is usefully more powerful, and definitely quicker than the W204 C350 I had previously.

It's supposed to be 538lb ft (735nm). However some people have taken certain cars to 1000nm and claimed it works fine ( I'm talking about the famous gold E420 cdi from YouTube).

Anyway, the 3.0 v6 probably won't reach 538lb ft with a normal remap, so you should be absolutely fine.

Ok so completed 700 miles this weekend, the first proper stretch since purchase.

Good things:

S212 corners flatter and feels more planted (both were Avantgarde Sports models)
Interior of S212 a nicer place to be IMO
Active light focus and high beam on my S212 fantastic
Fit and finish on new car obviously better inside and out

Bad things:
S212 smaller inside than S211
S211 seats much more comfortable
S211 seat heaters much hotter
To my musicians ears the Harmon Kardon is better in S211

BUT the worst thing was engine/gearbox

My S211 had factory 50nm upgrade and then a remap on top so seriously fast.

My S212 has been sitting a while (since Dec according to tax renewal) but felt sluggish, gearbox confused and consumption v v low.

700 mls mixture of town/m'way but 90% easy m'way.

32.2mpg average on Shell Nitro

V V POOR

Any advice?

My S212 E350 CDI Estate registered 27/07/2011 is the 265bhp model. Your reg doc will tell you i.e. Model E350 SPT CDI 265A or something like that. Estate emissions are 171 G/KM

7G Tronic + box has pt no 722.903 IIRC

Mixed consumption figures don't seem that far out. Bear in mind that the claimed figures are ummmm 'difficult to achieve'. Just think that you have a 231BHP large luxury car weighing a lot and your getting 32 MPG mixed driving. My mini clubman didn't do that. If a service is due (Engine lube + filters and gearbox ATF + Filter change can make a huge difference to the smoothness of the drive and give slightly better consumption.

Hope that helps.

Mark

Thanks for the replies. My S211 would do 50mpg if being careful and 42 if not. Surely this seems a backwards step....

I only ever saw 41MPG on my S211 E280 CDI once and that was by doing a constant 50MPH down the M3. TBH the consumption figures between my S212 and S211 are about the same the bonus is the S212 is 265BHP and the S211 was 190BHP! If you got those figures from your S211 E320 I'm impressed.

Maybe a good service is needed?

No matter how I drove, my 2010 E350cdi ended up back at 33mpg. Best on a run was around 38mpg, cold starts on the school run was 26mpg. But in the end, whether it was after 50 miles or 1000 miles it would end up at 33mpg.

My S211 E320cdi used to average 36/37mpg, I could see 48 on a run being careful and 39/40 hoofing it.
Mine was a 3 litre with the 7g 'box as well, but it had no dpf.

Obviously check your filters etc. and make sure your car is getting to temperature and staying there, it is at the age where thermostats start to go. But I don't think it is far off.

Was your s211 E320 the earlier one with a 5 speed?

I don't think it is smaller inside, I think the more boxy set up with higher windows and a vertical dash that is much higher makes it feel smaller.

Yes the S211 is a good car- that's why we kept it as a 2nd and got rid of my old BM.
It's the 3.0 with the 7g.
Perhaps the remap on it was better than I thought!

Are your figures manually calculated?

Some maps and tuning boxes can throw out the OBC readings big time.

My S211 used to get around 620 miles between fill ups, which was 36mpg.
My S212 cdi used to get around 550 miles between fill ups which was 33mpg.

My S212 E350 cgi gets around 490 miles between fill ups which is 30mpg.

You're saying that you get between 700-800 miles from your S211 by the time the reserve light comes on?
And a possible 850 miles if you push it a bit after the warning has come up?

You make a good point.

I'll do a manual check Thursday

My S211 E280CDI was a 55 plate IIRC it had the 5 speed auto box? Maybe the later 7 speeds gave better MPG.

Yes that's also true. Mine is the v6 also so perhaps that makes a difference too...

Update time

Well I'm happy with my S212. Lots of good things incl

Drives well and handles ok for such a large car
General feeling of quality (not always present on recent Mercs!)
Active beam assist on the lights
Pan roof lovely
Park assist useful for the missus!

Dislikes

Gearbox slow to engage compared to S211
Gearbox won't remember the last function you we in unlike S211
Seats not as comfortable as S211
Heated seats not as comfortable as S211
Harmon Kardon sounds better in S211

I've also had the car remapped and have achieved a best of 47.1mpg so far with it generally now easy to see 43-44mpg on a run

So overall a good purchase at a reasonable price that I hope will last well....

I have an E350 S212 'AMG Sport' first reg'd 25.03.2011 - the log book shows it as 'E350 SPT BLUECY 265 A' - an early 265 7G+ model.

It's my 3rd MB estate and has won me over as the best I've had yet (my S211 was a peach of a car which I still miss)

For me the mpg has been very satisfactory - recent run from Durham to Essex on Shell V-Power gave a good return of 47.9 - at one point it showed 48.7
