I've always owned Japanese cars, I dont care what anyone says, they are built well and the engineering is excellent. My advice to anyone has always been 'Buy German or Japanese (in that order). Well for the first time I am now able to afford a German car and I want a Mercedes. Cant afford a diesel, so it will have to be a C180 for about £4000.
If I do buy one, what kind of engine life can I expect, I would intend to keep the car for at least five years. I do all my own maintenance and Im a perfectionist beyond normality (according to the wife). If the book says 1.23 foot pound of torque, then thats what it gets etc...
Any advice on running costs, common problems etc from people who look after their own cars would be great. Meanwhile, Im chomping at the bit to get my 'new' mercedes.
:)

Hi Im sure youll find these a friendly bunch as i have so far. Agree with you on the German and Japanese. I have just got myself into the world of Mercedes with a C180 Sport. Again on around the budget you have mentioned.

As for problems I cant really say as I have only had her for around a month now but a thoroughly staisfied so far. You will here people say the C180 is slow and dull. I wouldnt complain unless you are used to fast cars. The auto can be a little slow on takes off but other than that no problems.

Welcome SSBB.

Any large Mercedes C,E or S should be good for 150,000 miles plus. Providing that it has been regularily serviced and looked after. There are many examples of this on this forum.

So the only thing is that you pay your money and take your pick of whatever you fancy. Always looking for a Complete Service History, ideally by a recognised Dealer.

Owners of C classes I am sure will advise on anything to especially look out for.

Good Luck in your search. :D

I too am extremely pleased with my w202 C200. I'm running this as my 4th car and it was supposed to be my runaround but since I've joined this forum its become my new cherished toy!

Since I passed my test in the lates eighties I have had cars from the following prestige manufacturers: Audi, BMW, Jaguar, Porsche, Jeep, amongst others. I can honestly say the Mercedes is the most smoothest and most comfortable car I've owned so far.

Not bad for a car that was only intended to be my station car :)

Steve
