New Van Woe, Help request from someone at mercedes in the know

Just for info a regular factory applied paint coat is about 100 microns, sometimes a bit less, sometimes a bit more.
A respray adds about 70 microns.

Steel frame Construction is the angle grinders friend. Laser and computer cuts don't go too well in concrete. This inevitably requires some minor adjustments. Bolt head grinding is common as is girder trimming from ugly welds.

Sorry, but absolute rubbish. And by the way, the chimneys in the picture are Ikea Croydon and last used in the the 1970's

Whilst I sympathise with the OP's paint problem, most of the postings in this thread are just silly.

So you are now going to tell us all why we are silly and how we imagine men with grinders trimming steel and bolt heads when attempting to get prefabricated panels to fit. You will then explain to the OP exactly what his problem is.

Can't wait. I'm just off to the imaginary building to tell the imaginary steel erectors to dump their silly grinders.

^ That looks like demolition, not erection.

The whole point of steel erection is that it is pre-fab, so quick to erect on site.

And presumably you can also tell us all that no cutting or grinding takes place? I bow to your superior knowledge. In fact it makes one wonder with people with such detailed knowledge of all things why we just don't bring the van to you and get you to write up your findings. Or perhaps you can tell us all what exactly is wrong without seeing the van.

That VIN number gives an order number of 5 1 537 53718 and a delivery date of 26 05 2010
Vehicle colour of ARTIC WHITE 9147
SA CODE X21 Generation one.

this date is ahead of the facelift release is it not? confused.... interestingly my front wings are a different shade of white, and not as orangepeely as the rest of the van. also found drivers door bump strip has been removed and put back on (screw is practically rounded off) why i dont know yet.

Perhaps instead of being pre-registered, your van was pre-crashed.

Wings are plastic, so not painted at the same time as the rest of the van.

i just checked they are steel, then found this extract:

"The maximum dimensional accuracy of the new fully galvanised steel wings ensures exact gap dimensions". (well they arnt that great, bit all over the place)

Yes, post-facelift 639 front wings are steel ... pre-facelift are plastic.

I will quote from the original post :-

I have a Nov 2011 Vito 113 CDI automatic, which has paint & body defects. It looks like it has been Littered in Metallic fragments. They are imbedded in the Headlamps, bonnet, front wings and Mirrors and follow down the van getting less frequent to the rear.

I Have been to and fro with MB customer services, approved repairer and now their 'specialist'. MB Specialist has viewed today and said to the dealer 'external influences' which is yet to be clarified. I can find no reason for this, it is like extreme rail dust.

And your explanation for this phenomenon is ---- what exactly?

It's interesting that this is the 2nd Vito on here this month with steel flakes/grindings in the paint.

I can't see a dealer allowing a construction or demolition firm to damage all it's parked vehicles, but wonder if something has been happening at the national storage/transport locations.

It's not - the other thread was started by the same person.
