Not always
I just saw one of these on the road this morning . I knew it was coming and had seen 'spy shots' of slightly disguised cars on test , but this was the first 'real' one I've seen - didn't realise it was out already .

As most of you will know , I'm not a fan of new cars and am indifferent to most of them , Mercs included : so VW should take it as a BIG compliment that it is the first new car in a long , long time that I've seen and thought " NI-I-ICE " :D

I have seen two now, and whilst I like the overall effect I think the front lacks any sort of presence, it's too soft for the car. If they sorted that out I would consider changing SWMBO's Golf for one.

I agree :)

It's fairly VW generic from the front. But from the side and especially rear it looks very good in my eyes.

I'm sure sales & residuals of 3 door Golfs will fall as a consequence.

Thing is, the Scirocco has been on sale for over a year and like you I have only recognised one or two on the road :(

I think the problem is that the car looks much like the Golf Mk6 and people are not prepared to pay the premium....

Agreed that the car is pretty - I looked at one last October and almost succumbed.

I think it's a bit like the problem with the earlier one and the Corrado... too expensive so will only sell in small numbers.

But I guess that is the attraction. Not everyone wants to drive a Golf...

I think they are nice cars and will take one over and above a golf. Comes with a nice diesel engine too. Shame about the similarities with the dash and front end - VW accountants at work.
I still think its distinctive enough and will consider one as a second car in about five years when they become available for beer money.

There's a blue one lives a couple of doors down from me! i think they're awesome, the front looks pretty mean, haven't seen in it in Black yet but bet it looks the sweet. Shame about the price though!

Went into my local VW yesterday to order a new golf for my daughter and in the showroom was a white Sirrocco it looked great without going over the top, not to keen on the seat style that would put me off unless they could offer something different.

gary

Personally given the starting price and the cachet, I think the cars will be ready for the scrappy by the time they are selling for "beer money"

Also, I don't think the car has the personality to be considered in the same breath as the Corrado.

The Corrado was for a production coupe rather nicely specified.

And still looking mighty fine for a car launched almost 20 years ago... quite Benz-like in that attribute I think.

I test drove both the 1.4 TSI and the 2.0l Golf GTi engine before choosing the CLC.

The engines are fantastic and is a better drive than the CLC, my only reasoning for not getting one, was that i simply didn't want one. Its probably a better car than the CLC, but i just loved the way mine looks. I don't regret my purchase at all.

Scirocco GTi is cheaper than Golf GTi. Also better specced.

I think it looks great. Low and squat at the front, with lovely broad hips at the back.

Much prefer to have a Golf GTi -- will hold its value better and IMHO looks better...Personally I think the Scirroco looks a bit of a dog....if I wanted a VW coupe I would buy an Audi TT.

Unfortunately, and I say that as one that likes the Scirocco very much, I have to agree with you Crockers in that the buying public prefer the Golf GTi also.

Whether I would say that the Scirocco competes directly with Audi TT, I don't know because the Scirocco is aimed at buyers wanting to get something that embodies the spirit of the Scirocco Storm but couldn't because they (like me infact) were too young.

Having said that, if I were spending £24k on a new car I would want more than a Scirocco offers.

I don't think the Scirocco is really a successor to the Scirocco and Corrado, as it's not a coupe by any stretch of the imagination, it's a chopped and widened three door.

I think it's a victim of the search niches, and niches within niches - whilst utilising as much current engineering as possible - to maximise sales volumes and efficiencies.

It has to tread a fine line between three-door Golf/A3 and TT, with an eye on the BlueSport Roadster for the future. I think the gap was too narrow, and what they've ended up making is a three-door Golf with sharper and more agressive looks and handling.

A niche within a niche then, but with a limited audience.

I too admire the Brera but am put off by the fact it is Italian. Irrational I know but I am also put off Vauxhall motors for innate reasons I cannot explain.

From a technical standpoint I would agree with you Bobby Dazzler but I think the Scirocco exists to exploit a similar portion of the market that would buy a modern Beetle or Fiat 500.

VW are very astute when picking up on "innovations" created by the owner base... as an example, the aggressive bonnet line harks back to the "Bad boy" brows crafted by owners of Gen 1 Scirocco's, as does using a 6-speed gearbox, first seen in my experience as an expensive mod for Golf MK2's

Thus, VW's are pitched at wannabe's while Audi (A3 etc) are aimed at more aspirational purchasers as Audi does not use (as an example) the Quattro ethos to sell cars

The first one I saw this morning was high gloss black , and looked stunning - from behind . I have yet to see one from the front .

Strangely , having never seen one before , I saw a subsequent TWO later this morning !!

All 3 sightings were on the M8 in Glasgow city centre - the first black one looked FANTASTIC , being clean and gleaming , the blue one I saw shortly afterwards looked OK , then the dirty black one I noticed later was unremarkable .

I like the dramatic-looking wide stance as seen from the rear , the sloping roof as seen from the side is also attractive , but hugely impractical , I suspect .

I think they do look nice, but don't imagine they'll age very well at all.

In fact, whenever I see one I always think of the cars that often got featured in car mags of old like 'Custom Cars'. All that jelly mould, wide body, plasticky styling/appearance.

The Origional Scirocco and the Corrado where both built on golf chassis. Exactly the same as the new Scirocco.

I really like them. The golf has got very boring and it seems like the designers have fallen asleep over the years. The rocco is much bolder in its design. Hats off to VW for injecting a bit of exitement back into their range.

IMHO both the Scirocco and Corrado were sufficiently different to be recognised as being a different model in their own right from the corresponding Golf platforms.

I personally see much less of a distinction between the curreent Scirocco and the three door Golf, probably due to the hatchback like upright rear end in profile.

The original Scirocco and Corrado had a more rakish rump in profile, and so whilst technically they have a hatch, they were visibly different to the contemporary Golf 'hatchback'.

The Corrado was - and still is - a mighty fine and ever so slightly mean looking car. The orginal Scirocco too, in a more delicate way.
