Hi,
I have recently changed my wheels/tyres on my V220:

OLD 16”x6.5 WHEELS
215 /60/16 (ALL AROUND)
ET55

NEW 18”x8 WHEELS
245/40/18 (F)
245/45/18 (R)
ET 44

However when I turn the car on a round about or general left/right turn when going about 5-10miles per hour I get a tyre scrape (midway between straight and full lock). Also when doing about 50 miles per hour staight I get a scrape also.
I have checked around all the tyres and there is no obvious reason for this, nor have the tyres got any markings.
The tyre specialist can't see any reason for this either.
I'm really really confused!!!
Pls help

Can't offer any advice specific to a V220 - but those tyres will give you a bit of a 'wacky races' stance - they are a bigger overall diameter at the back than at the front!

I would also say that a 245 wide tyre is probably pretty wide for the front of most vehicles. Perhaps the tyre is rubbing the arch or part of the suspension? Either way, something is not right. I would take them off for now and get some expert advice. Who sold you the wheels/tyres and how do you know that they are correct for your vehicle?

Good Luck, :)

Will

I'd have put 225/45/18 on the front, or maybe 235/45/18. You could actually get away with something as narrow as a 205 on the front but you'd have no rim protection if you bounce off a kerb.

245/40/18 should be ok for the rear, in overall diameter anyway, I can't comment on the actual fitment

amolak - you get a scrape when you are travelling in a straight line at 50mph??
The 245/45R18 size is S/CL fitment to an 18x8" rim, which should be absolutely fine. They (678mm) are ever so slightly (2.1%) bigger than the (664mm) 215/60R16 as standard.
We sell S/CL 18x8" sets with tyres directly for the V/Vito/Viano fitment, but if they are rims only, we usually supply the 225/45R18 because they are a slightly better match for the original size.
Why oh why do you have tyres on the front that are (3.8%!, 653mm) smaller than the rears?
Have you turned the wheel full lock when the car is static and felt around the tyre in the wheelarch?
Can I have a picture? If they are Mercedes OEM, they must be either Difda, Segin or Alberio...
Note to self..find out how to post a picture in a thread

These are 17x7.5" Mercedes OEM 'Mismar' with 225/50R17. Looks cool, non?

Hi,
They are genuine MB wheels. Picture attached.
I have done the wheel lock check, infact done a check from all angles, and chalked up areas to check!

Nice Difda wheels! Since you have gone bigger, I wouldn't think there is any problem with the disc dust covers, but the coilovers may have a plastic cover which could vibrate against the wheel at a certain speed.. This sort of thing is really difficult to diagnose remotely...
Are the tops of the wheels within the bodyline? (please can I have a pic of the whole car and permission to use it in our adverts?)

Hi,
Here is the Pic.
It is definatly the tyre rubbing, but there is nothing near the tyres at all.
THink I will show my mechanic tomorrow, otherwise back go the original wheels......

cheers

Hi,
It was the rear tyres causing the problem.
They were too wide out and rubbed in wheel arch.
Guess I need ET55 or nearby...

Oh well I will be selling these on Ebay.....

Thanks Murray

How much is it catching by? Taking into account that the rear tyres are wrong (too big) already, perhaps look at fitting different tyres?

225s might give you the clearance that you need.

Hi,
The wheel was about 1/4" outside the wheel arch so it would not have make that much difference. (might have worked)

To be honest I fouund the ride too harsh aswell.

Maybe a set of 17's in the future, but currently I'm a little hacked of with the whole thing!

cheers

1/4" - what's that, about 6mm - going down 20mm in the tyre's section (225) would surely cover that issue. But if you don't like the ride comfort...

Oh well - good luck with the new rims. :)
