I finally caved in to a set of 19"s and a set of these lovely Styling 4s are on their way from Germany :bannana:

Hopefully the weather will be good for a Easter weekend photshoot with also my new H&R suspension.

Seller claims they are unique 19X9.5 and 19X8.5 from the 171 SLK55 Pace car in that the wheels accept 12mm lug bolts with 12mm radius seats. The usual run off the mill Styling 4 2-piece are designed to take 14mm bolts.

Not sure if he's BS-ing but at least Chris is around for some hybrid bolts should I need them.

Nice looking Wheels,

Being highly picky I would like a deep dish rim for the rear on your car. (Something to polish on sunday mornings :)

They will look great though.

I like them

Look great!

May get a set of them for my CLK cabriolet and use the current wheels as winter wheels.

did you fit the big brakes or are they o.e.?
i only ask because they are seriously cool!

looking forward to the pics .. wondering what it will do the ride

I've accepted the ride quality will be poorer than 18"s. But given it's a Merc, it'll still be 10X better than what I'm used to with my M3s.

Nice  get the pics up asap...:)

Hi Nick, nice wheels please don't kerb these ones. Waiting for the pics plus new suspension set up - well done mate.

I love those wheels. I have a slight preferance towards the same wheel but with grey and silver rims, but would more than be happy with them !!

I've spent 1 year trying to think of an excuse to the better half why I need them on my SL. Can anyone think of some good excuses ? Remember that I have 3 kids and thus the 2 seater does not go down well with the better half - but as there is no 5 seater convertible, I may as well have a 2 seater one ...

Do you know what the the offsets are ? (ETxx)

The 12mm and 14mm bolt thing should be done corrrectly.

If you look in the 14mm hole, you can see the contact ring made by the bolt and that sits about 3-4 mmin from the edge of the hole.

Bolt it up with a 12mm bolt in the same hole, and the mark will be 1mm from the edge of the hole right on the thin edge of the taper, clip the kerb once and it will break away

19X8.5 ET30

19X9.5 ET31

Front off set will be perfect for my CLK. The W209 CLK rear can accomodate wheels of up to 20mm offset (I am currently running the 18" Styling 4 ET30 with 10mm spacers).

You want them and you can ;) ........ no excuses, no arguements; done ;)

Aha - that is exactly the correct offset for my SL for 19" wheels (18 seem to be ET33) .. I though the CLK was different to SL.

I can do that argument - but its not worth the trouble afterwards ....

Television, can you expand please ? Which bit is 12MM or 14MM ? is that the length of the bolt, or the width of the bolt (I guess its the width looking at a bolt)- but surely the bolt width depends on the hole in the hub ?
What will break ? The bolt or the hole in the wheel ?

Thanks

Richard

The wheels are SL fitment wheels (Mercedes do offer them for the CLK), although the seller claims that the set I bought was adapted to fit the SLK55 Safety car using 12mm bolts instead of 14mm. We'll see.

The wheel arches of the CLK can accomodate wheels of significantly more aggressive offsets than the factory wheels. I've tried with various spacers and came to the conclusion a front ET of 30mm and rear of 20mm are perfect for how I would like the stance on my CLK.

There's a risk of the the bolt seat on the wheel breaking under strain if 12mm bolts were used on wheels that take 14mm bolts, as the shape of the seat and the lug orifice is shaped and sized differently.

This is an issue all dissmissed to easily.

Post 2000 wheels use a 14 mm bolt, and pre 2000 cars use a 12mm wheel bolt.

Just using a 12mm standard bolt in the 14mm hole means that the wheel is only held on by a little metal in the edge of the 14mm tapered hole.

Just place the wheel onto the hub and do up one bolt, then remove it and look at where the 12mm bolt sits in the hole and the ring it makes about 1mm inside the edge of the hole
