Hey all, I'm going to get the rust tackled on my 202 by some people who know what they are doing (instead of me making it worse...).

They suggested I get a new wing to replace the old - and suggested I used a Euro Car Part one. Now, from what I've heard, they don't always fit too well, but the spray guy swears by them, and rekons its just people not being patient when fitting them.

What do you guys think? Are they really so bad, or is it like the man says, just unpatient folk who give up after an hour or two of fiddling?

Depends on how long you want to keep the car.

All bodyshops I know will always prefer an original body panel any day of the week as they will fit with next to no hasstle.

You will also probably find that the Euro wing will be a lot thinner in gauge.

You do get original new wings turning up on Ebay.

I'd rather a mint S/H wing to a pattern part item, but it all depends on £££, time, and how long you'll be keeping it I guess?

Strange to find a bodyshop guy who'd actually keen to use pattern parts!

Hi

The thing to remember the MB wings might fit well easily but they are not exactly perfect seeing that the current ones need replacing.

That being said though i will probably end up putting pattern wings on the wifes 124 and get them well painted.

You will see on the Euro Car Parts website that there may be several quality-grades of part available. If the part number ends in zero, it is OEM quality (i.e. made by an OEM supplier). They've made this explicit now in the listings as "OE quality".

The prices of these parts are often close to those of the same parts from MB; in the case of my W126 wings they actually exceed the price I was quoted by MB.

I wouldnt worry about fitting pattern parts - if its someone else fitting it. Remember to get a quote (not estimate) as otherwise it may be less time to fit a genuine part and you'll save the labour costs involved to go towards it.

However, i would try and get a genuine 2nd hand item that is good 1st.

I have this exact thing in my shed. I got it for..... 99p  I'll keep it until i either need it or sell the car

Cheers - I already have a quote for fitting/spraying so that's all good. I might have a look around for a gen 2nd hand wing before I get it done though.

Just to point out that if you can source a wing from an old w124 in a breakers , it is generally accepted that the quality of steel on the original wings is better than the later ones ( even OEM ) ...

You could buy a brand new wing from MB themselves today , but it will still be made out of the lower quality metal than the ones made in the late 80's / early 90's ....

Hunt around for an old one with no rust and get it painted . It will fit so much easier.

I have Tried to use ECP wings on cars in the past and have some really bad fits. I now use Hardians Panels for most of the 124's I need to fettle. They are of good quality and fit really well. A 124 wing from them costs £40, from Mb £120 upwards.

Proper wings go straight on with no fiddling.

Avoid at all cost replica panels, they don't fit properly and rust away rapidly.

Do you know if they do wings for the multivalve's? Ie with the vent on the drivers side?

I wouldn't use pattern parts anyway, but I take it that the ECP parts you have used were not "OE quality". Given the prices of their OE-quality wings, I would think that they must be of OE standard from OE suppliers.

I agree with the suggestion above that finding body parts from a breakers seems a good option, if they really are free of corrosion.

Yes they do.
