OK, so I have pretty much always had a soft spot for Jaguars (some rather more than others), and I received my brochure pack a couple of days ago for the new 2010 XJ, and - wow!

I have to say that I love it. It couldn't be more different to the previous (and very lame style-wise IMHO) version, which is a big plus in its favour. The interior is lovely, although it can be had in some odd-looking colour combinations!

The point to this post however, is the central information touch-screen. The driver and passenger can look at the screen and see completely different information. For example, the driver can be looking at navigation information, yet on the same screen the passenger can be watching a DVD.

Ingenious! But how does it work?

Mercedes have that as well on the new E and S. It works a bit like a holographic image. Remember the those childrens toys where depending on the angle you could see different pictures?

But it's an HD screen too, so the vertical separation must be exceedingly fine indeed.

And, as it's a touch screen, how does it differentiate between passenger touch inputs and the driver's if they are seeing different things?

Theres a tiny sensor on every pixel which can tell if its a Right or Left hand touching the screen, its called Fingertronic :)

On the other hand, the places where then driver and passenger touch could be different. Or KHZ has the answer. Either way very clever tech. The MB guys who have tried it say it works really well.

Maybe they have to log on when they get in the car, and the finger prints are stored ;)

So how much is that going to cost to fix once the car has become a 'classic Jag'? Oh sorry, I forgot: we are scrapping all the future classics at ten years old aren't we?

Going to a launch event on Friday so will be interesting to see if I can be tempted away from the default limo choices.

yeah i'd guess that the on-screen "buttons" are placed in different places for the passenger or driver.... ie a list on the left hand side of the screen for the driver and the list on the right hand side for the passenger, or something like that.

or a sensor that detects where the arm is (coming over from the passenger side vs the driver side).

or maybe it is finger-tronic.

whatever it is, my W124 doesnt have it.

Screen resolution is halved (vertically) when the dual display is activated - having said that, it is probably a reasonably high resolution screen in the first place.

Or the touch-screen uses a separate matrix that has nothijng to do w/ the split-display at all.

Sounds like a great piece of kit in what i think is an awesome looking motor. :thumb:

I haven't driven one yet, but I have had a good look at the inside and outside of a couple of demonstrators, plus I have seen several on the roads now, including one which blasted past us on the M1 like it was trying to out-run a bullet.

V. impressive!

I hope it works for them, as the outgoing model was a real let-down.

well if they are pointless it wont matter when they break anyway..

I too have a soft spot for Jags

It's a bit of a swamp on the edge of town :D

I don't want to get bogged down with the marsh of progress, but I too really like the new XJ.:o
We can't un-invent electronics and whilst I understand the concern over the durability of some of the complex systems we ceratinly could not enjoy all the comfort, performance and economy of these latest cars without.
Weren't we all going to crash at the turn of the century with the millenium bug?
I booked a flights to Australia on 01/01/2000 and got a cracking deal!:D

You've reminded me of all the fiasco surrounding the millenium bug! I was working at a Ford dealership at the time and some "IT bods" arrived with tales of woe and a huge potential bill to prevent the building collapsing and all the stock disintegrating at the strike of 12! I went home, set my PC clock to 23.55 31/12 and waited...... as we all know now, nothing happened! I went into work the next day, set the Boss's PC the same way and needless to say saved the company a lot of cash! And, no, nothing happened on the 1st! :) PS- Total Jag lover too and think the new XJ is a fine piece of styling! :)

People said that about electric windows, heated seats and comand yet now people on here happily fix and retro fit them on a sunday afternoon armed with the parts and some free advice from people on these forums....:ban:

Yes, but did he have a new XJ all fuelled up and ready in the garage?
