New York Hotels

The closest I've stayed to Times Square is about a dozen blocks north, at Park Central. It's on 7th Ave, at 56th. It's about three blocks from Central Park, which is the only bit of New York worth even looking at, IMO.

Try the Helmsley, 42nd and 2nd, very close to Grand Central and very big rooms for NY. Not the most modern decor but v comfortable

Octopus Travel sometimes have excellent rates, especially for advance bookings.

Beware, NY hotels are expensive even with the weak dollar due to very high occupancy rates these days!

Reckon on spending for a double - £100 a night for cheap , small and worn, £150 for better, £200 for better still and £300+ for luxury

I wouldn't stay on Times Square - very busy and noisy (all of NY is noisy but it's extreme there)..not sure I'd stay near Penn Station either, quite smeggy around there although near ESB, Macys, other shopping etc

Hi

Following some advice from here and other friends I have convinced my wife that staying on Time Square is not a good idea, so I am now looking for a hotel near Fift Avenue.... I think this trip is going to cost me dearly!

Really cannot suggest hotels but had to post since I stayed just recently at Helmsley too, Middletowne though. It all depends on the money one wants to spend, last time I was not paying myself I stayed here:

Just around the corner from Times Square, high enough and the noise isn't any issue. Would not pay for this myself.

Close enough to this:

Times Square is very noisy & busy, The Jolly Hotel Madison Towers is a charming Italian Boutique Hotel Located in the heart of Manhattan on Madison Avenue at 38th Street. We stayed there a few years ago and found it to be reasonably priced & in a good location.

Oh, 1 other piece of advise - In Macys (or Bloomingdales) (cant remember which sorry), go to the international visitor centre (its on a mezannine floor), show them your passport and they give you a discount card, gives you 10% (may have been 15%) of almost everything
