Hey all

Well me and the Mrs are 50 this year, so we decided to buy another car.

We have had a 2014 ML 350 D for about 5 years and honestly the only money spent on this car has been tyres, fuel, servicing. Nothing apart from a wishbone connector on the filler cap in all that time, its been an absolute pleasure and doddle owning a Merc however, I must admit I am not sure if this excellent buy was a matter of more look than judgment lol, I didn't even know what the engine size was when I bought it which just shows our expert " petrol heard skills" not

So, new cars we looked at:

1. Porsche Macan s - 55-60 k
2. Range Rover Sport - 55-60 k
3. Upgrade our 350ML to GLE 400d trade in total 55-60 k

The Porsche was probably not going to be practical as a full on daily runner as main use will run in to town ( 6 miles ) and back at least a couple of times a day and some travelling on motorways for holidays etc and probably never going to get 25mpg if we are lucky and my right foot can be heavy so that would bring me down to 20mpg and that is just silly tbh.

The Range rover sport, must admit was the other half's car of choice however, the problems that come with these cars, even for a non petrol head like us can not be ignored however, the fuel consumption would be more acceptable I must admit British engineering really gets me down for a country like us honestly, so we just can not be bothered buying a car that could be lets be honest a nightmare.

Upgrade and trade in the ML 350 ( 125,000 Miles ) good condition maybe get 10k trade in hopefully, to a GLE 400d mainly due to the fact you get air suspension and the drive comfort we imagine would be great . This would be the natural progression up from the ML 350 again however, not sure about fuel running costs but high 20s MPG I believe quite easily achievable. Can anyone provide me with an update to this claim please ?

So, it looks like that we are going to go with our heart instead of of our heads and stick to Mercedes.

Any feedback on the 400d would be appreciated.

Joe

Joe, I wouldn’t write-off the Macan based upon fuel consumption alone it’s a great car and I would be surprised if you managed to achieve noticeably more from the Range Rover Sport and maybe even the GLE.

The relatively lower depreciation on the Macan - certainly compared to a Range Rover Sport, and probably the GLE - could mean that the cost of running the Macan is noticeably less than the other two.

The GLE is a great car, but I can’t comment specifically on the 400d. There’s not really any common issue or drawback worthy of note, so if you like the GLE and you like the 400d then it seems a no brainier.

Like I say, I would check the fuel consumption on the Macan before ruling it out. I think you will be surprised. That’s said by a GLE fan boy.

Hi Bobby,

You know the reality is and when I standing back and just speaking and thinking about it with the Mrs that when faced with a choice between Land rover v Porsche the actual comparison by definition would I am sure send even a man from Mars in to fits of laughter, I could be wrong.

Tbh the fuel really isn't the deal breaker, the general consensus would be if you can buy a Porsche you shouldn't be looking at the fuel gauge and to be honest we are not in a position to have to worry about the fuel if its a hundred quid a week then fine.

But I bet my bottom dollar we wouldn't be worrying about whether the RRS is going to breakdown when we have the grand daughter in with us.

What I believe has put a spanner in the works so to speak is that we have had a Merc ( I have also bought a couple of C Classes for traveling for some work) and they just have not caused any issues, again speaking from a zero competency in anything mechanical, I am still not allowed to change a 3 pin plug at home lol.

Cheers for the feedback though its now down to a straighter between the Merc v Porsche

The other factor to consider is size. The Macan is quite a lot smaller than the GLE which could be an advantage or a disadvantage.

I recommend Macans all the time though to friends, and every single one of them has been absolutely over the moon with them. Very impressive cars.

Strangely, my wife and both drive GLE/MLs though, and have done for many years, as they just suit us, and like you we’ve had a good experience with them.

Hi all,

Just need reserve the thread as we are going through the emotional merry go round in our car purchase lol

Ok question is:

Is the GLE 400d AMG line also the premium + or is there a AMG Line and premium + ie 2 different model ?

Secondly, if there are 2 models could someone be so kind advise on the differences plz

Oh buying a car ……😂

Thanks in advance all

To keep it simple
AMG Line
AMG Line Premium
AMG Line Premium Plus

Best bet is to download brochure if a newish one, or get spec sheet on car of interest.
Earlier GLEs of that generation had a slightly different line up of options till they settled with the current offering but ultimately, AMG Line premium plus is the highest spec.

Hi Sambo

Thanks and I have an update 👍 we plunged and did it i.e we stayed with Merc after all and bought GLE 350 d AMG premium plus 2022 plate in stunning red.

So, my next question is what the heck do I do with this airmatic ? I just tested it today at home and I see that it raises and looks a like a big dumper truck lol

So, do I just raise it and drive around lifted until I find what is more comfortable for example daily town runs or will this d manage my car ?

I assume that if I raise half way up for example this should provide me with the most smooth ride ? Help

J
