SL55 AMG
Hi,

As a newbie you'll have to forgive what might sound like a stupid question; is there a dedicated SL55 forum or thread?

I'm just about to buy a 2003 SL55 AMG and wanted to ask a couple of questions and do some research into common issues.....its a beautiful car but a little knowledge can be dangerous so any advice and experience from other owners will be invaluable.

Have you thought about a 2006 SL500 with a bit of money left over just in case?

To be honest, I've got the chance to buy this car from a good friend who i trust so it's a good opportunity, but I thought I should do a little research beforehand.

Can't beat that. Sorry I can't help with the SL-a bit out of my league I'm afraid.

Newbie? You've been a member since 2009!

Am not aware of any dedicated threads, but there's a wealth of knowledge on here. Have a look on the search facility, that may help.

Belated welcome, BTW :thumb:

Is it the Vito that got you buying another Mercedes? I bought a Viano a few years ago that got pounded and it never missed a beat. Thats what made me choose a B class.

The Vito has been great... no problems. The sL is an opportunity to buy form a friend so this part is all very new to me. Thanks for your responses.

If you let us know a few more details. Mileage, options, colour how many owners etc etc. There are lots of SL owners on the Forum and quite a few that have a 55 Kompressor engine, not necessarily in a SL body.

Thanks guys, great feedback and you can't get any better than other drivers experience. Anything I find useful I'll report back. Apologies if this is boring for regular readers and for repeating on two threads.

Approx spec....

2003 Sl55 AMG
Two or three owners (need to confirm)
44500 miles
Full MB history
2010 New roof seals MB fitted.
Brilliant metallic silver paint
Vario glass roof
Perforated leather heated and cooled, massage seats
Keyless go
Cruise control
Distronic
Parktronic
Bose sound system
Not sure which alloys they are but they have lots and lots of spokes.... If that's the right name?

I think that's it?

On area which is a shame is the front bumper on Thr lowest section has a crack in it which has been caused no doubt in a car park kerb or maybe high speed hump? Not sure of replacement cost but imagine that's expensive as the whole bumper is one unit. Might look into possible repair?

Now thinking about whether a warranty would be advisable? I had a quick look tonight and "warranty wise" we're quoting approx £1100 for a years cover but not looked at the small print in detail yet so will be interesting to find out what's "actually" covered.

Do people still use car covers? Thought it could help prevent the weather wear and tear whilst not garaged? If anyone can recommend where to buy a genuine SL55 cover I'd be interested?

What do most people do for a car phone as it appears MB opted (certainly in 2003) for Nokia.... I need to ask Alfie at Comand about this one!

Tyres, currently has Pirelli P Zero Rosso.... ???

The alloys need a bit of TLC too... See I'm making my wish list already ....

...Carbon centre console
...New steering wheel
...Interior valet (professional not my local drive thru)

Sorry you must be falling asleep by now!

Thanks again.

A full set of options, good mileage and a full MB service history. Sounds like a good buy, depending on the price. Those wheels are "Turbine " not nice, treat yourself to a nice set of AMG 1V Two piece wheels, Have a look at www.alloywheelsdirect.net where you will find a great choice of AMG's. They are a member on the Forum

Ask if he has had any ABC issues, + make sure all the electrics work, key-less go etc.You can check with MB for the service history.
