2006 Mercedes C200
Hey all!
I have a 2006 Mercedes C class coupe (c200).
I'm not a technical guy in anyway so bare with me.
I had a situation where the car failed to start and then after towing it to one garage they said it was the timing chain that jumped but they didn't want to get involved with it.
I laid for it to get towed to another garage, who said the timing gear had jumped, they would charge short of 2k for replacement and also new filter (couldn't remember which they said it was).
They also said they weren't keen on doing the job as there could be further damage to the valves etc and they don't have the time.

This car is unbelievably special to me and I want to keep the car going so I wondered if any of you good folks could offer me any lifelines as to what to do now?
I'm based in Tadley, Hampshire.

thanks in advance!

To be of any real help it would be useful to know what engine is installed in the car !
Gasoline (petrol) or Diesel would be useful , and the configuration being either V6 or inline engine all based up model line up .
Some engine applications I see where I am, have valve train weaknesses other do not !
Generally such failures are generated at certain mileages & therefore it often helps to know how many miles are on it, and the engine's service history.

Sorry I completely forgot!
It's a 1.8 petrol SE Automatic
The milage I believe is roughly 120,000 (car is not nearby)

The M271 engine is known to have cam chain problems , starting window for problems is 80,000 miles ? Damage can be caused as the garage says and they may not want to get involved in a rebuild of the engine .
If the top rocker cover is removed they should be able to see if the chain has skipped ?

They said that it had jumped so I assume that they mean skipped but not overly sure, the lady sounded quite rude and like she couldn't care.
Spoken to another garage who will look at it on Friday but he said potentially it might need more work than the timing chain which I can understand but was hoping not lol.
I guess it'll be a case of potential rebuild

If the chain has jumped a tooth you can guarantee it would of bent valve's not really a big deal on a petrol engine yes it will need the head rebuilding but not overly expensive imo🙄

Normally I hate hearing bad news but in this case that's almost a blessing to hear other than my wife saying she was leaving me.

Do you know any Mercedes specialists (not main dealers) nearby you could get the car to? Its a known issue with that engine. its certainly repairable but it needs to be done right with the proper Mercedes parts or parts of the same quality. Its also better if a Mercedes specialist who knows these cars can do the work as they will know all the issues or things to look out for when doing the rebuild. Good luck

There's a company called Auto Merc based in Newbury, so spoke to a really great chap called Gordon who told me it's best he inspects it and will let me know the damaged but something he's seen before which was reassuring, although there's a difference between saying "I've seen that before" and "yeah I can fix it" but I have hopes......
So Friday the car will head up there.

Well all the best for a favorable outcome!
I hope you are not like a past customer who had one of these, and I threaded a chain into it to save his day & the car's longevity
Then stiffed us on the bill !
Oh well --memories & bad wives

Ouch! I hope you got your money!
The first garage who inspected it and said what the fault was wouldn't charge me even though I offered to cover their time.....
Hopefully she will be back up and running soon.....

It sounds as if your local Indie can sort it for you, I had mine done as a precaution, by the local stealer, Over £2k. It should be less for you, if you're lucky, it may not have jumped enough to damage the valves, fingers crossed, do let us know how you get on ?

If it doesn't start valve's will be bent 2k seems extremely steep to me? But im not a garage always exspect the worst and anything better is a bonus
