The fault could be the engine mounts being worn so the selector not pulling selection rod to the correct position.

BTW, the gearbox is a 5 speed, not 4 speed. 1,2,3,4,D.

...prob leave it to the mecahnic, the draining the torque converter has scared me off, especially if it does indeed have nothing to with the tranny fluid, i was looking at this tute here.
