Hello All,

i'm new to Mercedes and new to the forum. I've spent the past 10 years in Volvo D5/T5's. I was meant to be buying the wife a small runaround for town use over the weekend and had an impulse moment over the weekend and bought a 2005 C230 coupe (2.5 v6). Beautiful car. Sporty, and has an AMG pack which makes it sound great.

I picked it up with a few problems. Its only done 58k miles with warranted service history but as its been rarely driven I think it'll need a bit of work.

The seller reckoned it had been serviced last week, but looking at the oil I don't think it has. I've ordered all the stuff for a full service, fluid and brakes, so hopefully i'll get that done over the next couple of weeks.

Its smoking a bit - more grey smoke than white (defo not blue or black) - I thought first of all due to the lack of use and just needed the cobwebs blown out, but despite 100 miles since its still a bit smokey. The oil needs changing, but I cannot see water in it, and likewise the coolant is not oily.

I've bought a code reader and its flashed up two error codes:
P0422 - Main catalyst efficiency below threshold bank 1.
P2188 - cylinder bank 1 too rich.

after reading up on this forum and others, I thought it could have been MAF, but then that would effect bank 2 too? So my gut feeling is that it could be O2 sensor in bank 1, or a defective cat, or possibly a camshaft sensor??

Just wondering if there is anything else I should address......

finally, the seller said it had a slightly noisy chain, so i'd factored that in for a change, but I can barely hear it - so I wonder if its a slightly stretched chain could that make it overfuel as camshaft too open?

Thanks very much in advance. As I said completely new to Mercs, so sorry for the questions. In the past I've spent hours on the Volvo forum helping newbies with Volvo's, but i'm completely in the dark on mercs. :)

Hi All,
just a quick update on this.

I've given her a full service and changed the downsteam bank 1 o2 sensor.
was working fine - no smoke and felt better.

did a 100 mile round trip yesterday and the Engine light came on - same errors as before :(

I reset it and its not come back on...yet...
I have noticed that my chain is sounding noisier since the service - the old oil was black, so i'm wondering if that might have done it. anyway, I think the chain needs replacing, so I am wondering if FEBI or SWAG brands are any good as they are 40-70% of the price of genuine merc?
TIA.

Well hello and welcome, just shows a nice low mileage example and it needs work, you do not say where you are based but a look on the site will throw up great indys who will put a star on it and find out just what is happening,it is too easy to start changing things and buying parts and it could all be a waste of money, best of luck.

thanks Zipdip.
I'm in Swindon. I previously had a version of Volvo's own software which was excellent compared to 1. dealer costs and 2. basic code readers, so felt a bit lost not having that.

I've made a couple of enquiries for a timing chain change, and 1 quote which came back was c.£2k as they said engine had to come out - so I can only assume hes factored in the balance shaft too.

i'll have a look around to see if anyone nearby had Star and I might need to check the camshafts line up through the sensor holes over the next day or 2.

Well I am no expert on the C230 but like most chain driven engines and given the car has not done lots of mileage maybe you can get away with just replacing the tensioner's,but there is bound to be a expert on here that will point the way forward, you sound as though you know one end of a spanner from the other, the major cost of the chain drive being replaced is the labour I think the part is about £200,I think the engine needs to come out as it is at the back of the engine against the bulkhead, hope you get it sorted.

Hi & welcome, we have a C Class estate with the same M272 engine.

You mentioned the balance shaft ... just wanted to check you knew about the known issues with this and the adjustment solenoids (two of which cause the EML to come on). You can check based on the engine number which category it falls into:
