Jag S-Type R? Cheapest way to get into 400 BHP as far as I know..

Cheers,

Gaz

What year was it? Up to the facelift in 2002, they were utterly appalling, but after the facelift they were good cars. I had a T-reg V8 that I'd gladly have seen burn, and a 52-reg Type R that was awesome and reliable.

You won't get a 202 c55 for £5k

You might get a converted 43 , but not a proper 55

If it's been converted to take a '55 lump, it's 'proper' as far as I'm concerned, unless you're a collector that will store a 'proper' C55 in a barn, I can't see the problem.

A decent 190E 16v is worth a lot more than £2/3k too. You'd be buying a rolling restoration car for that kind of cash unless someone is seriously underselling (very unusual these days - normally owned by enthusiasts who are well aware of values) Only four seats though!

Porsche Boxster? 350Z?

208 CLK55 great value IMHO - proper '55 running gear, better spec and same chassis setup as a W202 - only four seats again though.

Does it have to be five seats and fast? :)

Don't forget, a W202 C55 is not just a C43 with a larger engine - it has the proper '55 running gear - and AFAIK the chassis is slightly modified to suit (larger diff, different propshaft, gearbox etc)

I think they were circa £20k more than a C43 when new...

But if you're not worried about provenance then I guess a modified '43 is fine and obviously a lot cheaper! :thumb:

Whilst I take your opinion very seriously Will, I've been watching the values of 190 Cosworths, watching them start to rise for a couple of years and but it seems that those that are priced north of £4,000 struggle to sell, I think any car over 12 years old (unless it's been through a money-no-option restoration) will be a rolling resto to be honest.

I genuinely do love the cars but to throw more than £3k at one is something that I can't (and I have tried, believe me!) get my head round. I will probably end up buying one, I think it'll just have to be on a whim when I do!

I can't ever see me owning a Porsche until I'm bald and fat, which is some way off (I hope!):D

Not keen on the 350Z, can't put my finger on it though if I'm being honest.

I'd take on a 'project' four seater, and a CLK 55 208 has gone through my mind but I'm not a fan of the front end on them or the W210 (although bizarrely I really like the cabrio's)

Ideally, yes! :thumb:

I would be genuinely interested to know exactly what the differences were, I know that technically you had to buy the C43 in standard form and then have it shipped to AMG who would work their magic.

The last (and probably only) genuine W202 C55 I saw for sale was quite some time ago, it was an estate and it was £16k iirc

I'm not an 'enthusiast' to the nth degree, I just like to have a bit of fun with my cars! :D

Just to let you know, that tan belt in a 40" is on its way to you mate. :D

^Nice. The 944 would be my pick of the Porkers. Fantastic balance and turn in. I would go for the unloved S 16v for a bargain.

The 5 seat thing is killing this thread.

All the saloons and Estates in your price range have been done.

I know we've discussed similar before Lee, but...

I've bought six of them and sold four, and have a good few friends who've bought and sold dozens of them.

Unless you have a shedload of spares, plenty of tools, free time and knowledge and don't mind getting your hands dirty rebuilding engines/restoring them etc then cheap 16v cars just don't exist.

You'd be amazed at what kind of bills you'd see from a MB specialist if you took a £2/3k car in for a healthcheck/'once over'. Seriously will almost certainly cost you more than the sorts of cars you've been playing with recently - AMGs are cheap to run by comparison - they only have niggles and rust to deal with, not engine rebuilds/structural welding etc. We're not talking cosmetic 'flaky wheelarch' rust and little fettling jobs/electrical niggles like the Y2K era MBs but genuine 'restoration' type work, labour of love type stuff - cylinder head overhauls, major welding and suspension rebuilds are now the norm.

The youngest 16v cars are 20+ years old now, the oldest ones approaching thirty - they are very good fun cars but unless you pay up front for a proper one you'll spend a lot more in repairs!

I can sell you a cheap project 2.3-16 if you like. 115k miles, manual, blue-black metallic etc. I think it's only had 3 or 4 owners from new. Was MOT'd and taxed until a few months ago not a lot wrong with it to be fair now - but it would never be any good for you as other than DIY'ing the repairs/maintenance the costs would be prohibitive!

And that's not even a bad one, it's actually quite a solid and pretty original car...
