My mate has just got home from work to find a NIP from the Met Police for an alleged traffic light offence

Now there's no dispute that he was driving at the time on that stretch of road and he does also recall an incident with the lights changing. Anyway, he believes that he stopped as naturally it would be dangerous to jump a red light and he felt it was safe to stop on this occassion (however he thinks that part of the front of his car had possibly crossed the line). He also mentioned that after he came to a stop another car jumped the lights.

He's pretty certain that this is the traffic light in questiion from the information on the NIP - however no doubt the photographic evidence will prove this.

Anyway the main question is, does anyone know whether the Met Police (I know some other forces do) offer Traffic Light Awarness courses (in the same manner as speed awarness courses?). I appreciate that if they do it's likely to be discretionary. However, it will help put my friends mind at rest if anyone knows if the Met Police offers such a scheme.

If he stopped, why is he considering taking any penalty, even a course?

Maybe its not worth the hassle debating it as part of this car was over the stop line, therefore breaching the law

First thing he should do is ask to see the photographic proof

+1 agree this is the right course of action.

If the other car was the trigger for the camera then it needs contested.

Gatso cameras take one photo when the vehicle crosses the stop line and a second photo one second later.

Request copies of the photos.

Oops I mean ask your mate to ask for copies.

Traffic light awareness courses LMFAO are you serious, It's not hard is it The light turns red you stop it turns green you go. I could teach a monkey that in 10 seconds

He either ran a red light in which case take it on the chin or he didn't so appeal and ask for the photograph

Traffic light awareness courses  what next lollipop man recognition courses :D

Tell me about it, I couldn't believe that some forces offer them!

You missed a trick: when the lights go amber slow down and stop.

Wouldn't want to be accused of being an "amber gambler" now would we :D

Sore subject with me :o A90 in Scotland lights go amber I boot it 200 yards through lights cop in road pulling me in. I protested my innocence swearing lights had not turned to red, then he dropped double six saying I know, I've stopped you for speeding

Ouch! Not saying anything would have been the best policy there. Benefit of hindsight!

Yep like a fool lights go amber I check rear view mirror lots of traffic, boot it booked for 42 mph in a 30 mph, our Scottish friends will now the spot heading to Glasgow dropping down hill from the Shell garage to the lights at the gym then through with cemetery on the left which is where he pulled me into. Should have kept my mouth shut but in the end just held my hand up and said fair cop :thumb: Lesson learned

I don't think that stepping over the white line is an offence as such - I am fairly certain that you have to actually cross (or enter?) the junction on a red light in order to trigger NIP.

Not suggesting it is wise or advisable to do so, it is just that I can't imagine anyone being NIPed or prosecuted for braking and stopping albeit with the front wheels just over the white line?
