Hi All,

I have a problem, can not get my alloys off my 190 because I don’t have the security socket, bean to MB very help full parts guy, but didn’t now where I would get a socket like the one on my car,

So here’s a picture of the wheel bolt on my car, does any one on here, have any idea how to get these off, or where to get a socket.

Thanks KJ

I had exactly the same thing when I bought a 190 and found there was no key for the locking bolts .

With three of them , I managed to hammer on a socket that was a tight fit over the head of the bolt and managed to remove them without much difficulty .

The fourth one was more stubborn and I had to resort to drilling it out . I started out with HSS drills but quickly wore several out as the metal of the bolt was so hard - in the end I found the best thing to use was a masonary drill on the hammer setting . Once I had drilled so far into the bolt , I was able to use a large left-handed bolt extractor to remove it .

This was the offending bolt afterwards

Hi Pontoneer,

I was hopping for something less drastic , may be a magic wond or some think, If I don’t get a security socket, or manufactures name, ill have to resort to the same sort of action.
Thanks a lot for your help, glad to see you got yours out.
Regards KJ

Assuming they are OEM locking bolts - Take the car to the dealer they'll check which socket you need out of the set of thirty and buy it [IIRC was £20 four years ago]

Hi Big Sean,

Thanks for advice, Did that this morning, the MB dealer was really help full, but had not seen these before, so can only think that there an after market set.

Thanks again KJ

Those look VERY similar to the ones fitted to a 190 I'm selling on tonight. I suspect the "devil is in the detail" on these, and it's the size of the 'nibs' around the outside of the central circle that dictates which socket fits which nuts.

I can tell you that the locking nuts on mine were from "Motorsport Wheels" (Motorsport Wheels Fox Racing RS Alloy Wheels and Toyo Tyres although i can't see locking nuts on there). Just in case it's useful, I still have the box and the text on it is:
* "EL402"
* "12mm x 1.50, 17 hex Wheel Locks"

Hope that's of some help.

Hi manilishi,
Thanks for the response, ill call in to there Stockport branch tomorrow and see if I can buy a socket or even a socket and bolt set.
Thanks a lot KJ

Hi they arent a standard MB part maybe halfords do the keys though. MB ones have a central lug.

Hi 6 POT
Thanks for help, went to halfords in Edge Lane, Liverpool, wasn't much help to be honest.
the lad in there wasnt keen on checking for me, if motorsport can't get one, i will check at a difrent Halfords.
Thanks again for your help KJ

Just bang a socket over it. BINGO!

Given all the talk of halfrauds in this thread, this is the point you discover whether or not you bought a quality chrome-vanadium-steel socket set, or monkey metal crap from halfrauds etc al.

Snap On do a removal tool for locking bolts with lost keys 15 secs per wheel and they are off, as iscaboy says locking bolts complete waste of time and won't deter the professional theif after expensive alloys

Hi All,
Finally got the security bolts of, did what Black c55 said, and hammered a long reach socket on, with a bit of sweat and blood got all 4 off.
THANKS FOR ALL YOUR ADVICE
Regards KJ

Halfords 'professional' range tools are fine - but they certainly do some cheap cr@p as well :D
