Hi guys

Last night my 220 cdi starting making a funny sucking noise when under load. Then it was all silent and i lost most of my power.

My mate took off the egr and cleaned it but it wasnt closing its self when he manually opened it, is this normal?

My engine management light also came on after 50 miles and my ESP error has been showing for a week but i put that down to needing new tyres. Which in another story has been a nightmare with the locking wheel nut key being chewed up. Tried hammering on a socket, burning equipment and even welding a nut on to the bolt but no joy!

Anyway the turbo is my main concern, had a quick look and listen for leaks but couldnt find any!

any ideas?

Thanks in advance

garage's computer has flagged up low boost pressure, egr fault and steering wheel sensor so said they need to do some further investigation......

Get them to check the top boost hose that goes into the EGR. They split often. About £46+vat IIRC

Thoughts on lack of boost and engine light as above.

On the ESP issue I have an important question...

When travelling in a straight line, is the steering wheel in the dead-ahead position, or off to one side?

Very often tracking issues are the cause of steering angle sensor 'faults', when in actual fact the sensor is fine.

Hi guys

garage just called saying they cant sort it and totake it to a dealer :(

they have checked the hoses and egr and cant find a fault.

alex the steering wheel was slight off centre and i think that happened after i had the tracking done at national tyres so not sure if they did it wrong?

Now, if we knew where you where, we could advise where to take it...other than a dealer.

So with the ESP, the steering needs to be put back straight by whoever you tracked it with... Then disconnect the battery for say 30 miunutes... then reconnect and start car and turn steering lock to lock 3 times... that should sort that.
You will also have to initialise windows and sunroof if you have... same procedure, up and down three times.

Cheers jay i will try this tomorrow. i knew about the steering side to side but hadnt realised the battery needs disconnected first.

Is it possible the esp fault has disabled the turbo?

Just to explain further with the ESP issue. Your car has a steering angle sensor and also a Lateral acceleration sensor..
The reason it is detecting a fault is that the steering angle sensor is telling the system you are going around a corner, yet the car is not experiencing any lateral acceleration, i.e. the car is dead flat... This scenario is obviously wrong and therefore the ESP module cannot carry out its function.

Advice as above with the tracking needing adjusting.

The battery does not need to be disconnected, the fault code can be erased and the steering angle offset value reset to zero.

Sadly this common issue is soooo often mis-diagnosed. I had a customer in for a second opinion that had been to another local garage recently, and had been told they needed a new angle sensor.
That particular garage should have known better...

Just to add to my woes the heater plug light is now coming on intermittently!

thanks for the help guys but i had tracking re-done so steering wheel is straight and disconnected battery for an hour but no joy.

guess im parting with some serious wonga.....

Maybe, but have you actually erased the codes (disconnecting the battery will not do it) and reset the zero offset?

Alternatively drive it on a straight road for a few miles at approx 50 mph for it to re-learn.

hi alex , yeah drive about 50 miles on motorway each for work and no joy just the red face when lorries over take me going up hill.

Its going to the specialist today i quoted earlier so will let you know the outcome. cheers for your input though
