Trying to insure my new (to me) car in addition to my E36.

It seems that my NCD can only be applied to one car at at a time which means my premium for the new car is an astronomical £850! due to zero NCD.

I hate insurance companies!

Anyone got any recommendations / ideas / ruses please?

I'd suggest trying other insurance companies. I've never had any problem applying my NCD to second cars. You don't have to have both cars insured with the same company.

Multi car policy, some of the insurers will give you an introductory discount equal to the NCB you have on your other car. This is how I first insured my CLK.

There's a specialist broker in Manchester that does great deals in insuring second cars I think they trade under quoteline direct. Give them a call and tell them what you need to do they will work you something out I'm sure. I used them before switching to Admiral when we got to 4 cars.

Hope that helps

You can only use your NCB on one car only if you try and use it on two cars the second car which you used it on in the event of an accident or claim will be deemed to be uninsured.

Below is a FAQ of the Association of British Insurers (ABI)

Will I be able to use my No Claims Bonus on more than one car?

Unfortunately not. For each policy, a driver will accrue a separate NCB. If you’ve got one vehicle with NCB and you insure a second car in your name, you will still only be able to use your NCB allowance on one of those policies, and you can’t split your NCB between the two. However, you may want to speak to the insurance provider who covers your current car, as they can sometimes offer an introductory discount on a second vehicle.

Use the NCB on the more expensive to insure car and start earning it on the other.

Or...

could either car go on a classic policy where there is no NCB used?

I called Adrian Flux for a 'classic' policy to insure the W163 when we bought the W164, and had to really persist and persuade the call agent to provide a quote.

They could do classic on a 9 year old car but they did provide a qoute with mileage limited to 3000 miles per year without no claims, at about the same cost as it was insured on a 'normal' 10000 miles policy with 15 years NCB.

Id put the E36 on a classic policy - It would be far cheaper, fixed valuation, and no claims doesn't come into play with classic policies.

Try Peter Best

Gents,

Thanks for the help.

I have now put the E36 on a classic policy for a lot less than I was quoted by my insurer of 10 years with no NCD. My wife's car is also insured with them - so much for loyalty!

Seems classic policies don't take NCD into account anyway.

I think a decent option cost wise is to put one on a classic car policy and another on a separate policy with a third joining the second policy thus becoming a multicar policy er and the fourth could also go on the multicar policy
aviva are quite good they offer good cover and the multicar discounts are very decent too
adrian flux would have been my recommendation for classic car but you are sorted anyway

but i agree with you about loyalty - you actually have to move to get a better price:dk:

your e36 might be at the top end of the mileage allowance for a classic policy but you may be able to get an agreed valuation - i have this its worthwhile

Hi, quite correct the NCB can only be applied to one policy, my quote for the 230CE (2nd car) was over £800 !! I found this broker (link below) who specialise in 2nd car insurance and offer what they call "mirrored NCB discount" which does pretty much what it says!! Total cost with them around £325 :) Thats paying monthly and you can cancel anytime without penalty, ideal if you just want summer cover etc..
You cannot do this online but need to phone them, dead easy tho, all done on 15 mins and covered immediatly.

The best possible use of any NCB entitlement would be better placed on the more expensive or high-risk vehicle and would probably be the way to go, for me it is anyway, I’ve already arranged to do just that with my new car when it arrives in December. Any NCB entitlement can only be applied to one car, per policy, and cannot be shared between vehicles.

My old 230CE (W214), which I’ve now had for 22 years, is on its own policy with a maximum NCB entitlement and it’s used every weekday for work travel and the like. My CL500 (W215) which I have now had for over 8 years, is also on its own policy with a maximum NCB entitlement, although mileage allowance is limited to 6000 miles per year, but I only use this car occasionally, sometimes mid-week and the odd weekends anyway apart from holidays and the like. Even my Harley, which I have had for 15 years, is on its own policy with maximum NCB. My new Audi A8L W12 has been on order for the past several months now and actually arrives at the dealers on 20th December. I will then be using the NCB entitlement from the 230CE policy by just adding the Audi to the policy (change of vehicle) and paying the difference with an administration cost of (£25.00) and then re-insuring the 230CE from scratch, as it were.

The plus points from my point of view is that all my vehicles are insured through the same broker - Adrian Flux, and have been for the past 8 years or more now, although they are separate insurance companies for each vehicle. I do also have 39 years driving experience and a history of never having ever made an insurance claim, so that helps anyway. The other plus point is the huge savings (in the region of £1000.00) by insuring the Audi in place of the CE by just transferring the Audi on to the 230CE policy which actually offsets the premiums due on the CL, CE and Harley combined.

To sum up the above, I can get every one of my vehicles insured for less of a premium than what it would have actually cost me to just insure the Audi from scratch without any NCB entitlement, which was originally quoted in the sum of £1.706.60. So all the vehicles will be insured on a fully comprehensive basis for £1,702.88 see details below. That really is a good deal, plus, I would prefer to have individual and separate policies rather than the multi-car type policies that are on offer with some other insurers. I never shopped around because Adrian Flux has always been very fair as far as I am concerned, excellent service, can’t fault them really. For me personally, it actually works in my favour. Even my wife insured her car with them this year and saved herself over £200.00 less than that what her previous insurer Admiral had quoted her at renewal. Often it really does benefit the individual to stay with the one broker, especially when there are two or more vehicles involved, often resulting in bigger discounts. This is what its actually costing me this year.

Harley Davidson - £119.00 - with max no claims bonus - Motorcycle Insurance Group 16
Mercedes CL500 (W215) - £504.26 - with max no claims bonus - Insurance Group 50
Audi A8L W12 Exclusive - £721.82 - with max no claims bonus, including the £25.00 administration fee and adjustment costs of the policy from the 230CE - Policy upgrade - Insurance Group 50
Mercedes 230CE (W124) - £357.80 - start of a new 12 month standard policy in December when I switch over. Insurance Group 14

In total, for all 4 vehicles - £1,702.88, whereas, the new Audi A8L W12 alone without any bonus entitlement at all was £1,706.60, it doesn’t make financial sense not to move the bonus entitlement around and benefit from it and place it on to the higher risk/value vehicle. I can only speak for my particular circumstances; others may have a different view or outlook, but that’s my advice anyway. Even if I don’t keep the 230CE, then it will still only work out at £1,345.08 for the three vehicles. Note that the CL500 and the A8L W12 are the very highest group (50) in the new insurance group ratings as well.

Look at the difference in the quotes on the Audi - Original quote £1,706.60 without any bonus entitlement – compared to £721.82 with maximum bonus entitlement - £984.78 difference, this figure more than covers and pays for all the other three policies together.

When I bought the CLK last December it was my first private car for over 10 years, having been using company cars. When I shopped round for insurance I was a little concerned having not built any no claims. I found a few companies that would recognise my no claims from company car driving so got quotes from them. In the end I went with LV who gave me full no claims at 9 years.

Thing is, they never asked me for any proof or evidence, I had a statement prepared from work and signed by the Financial Director but was never asked to prove or send anything.
