I have to say the most disappointing thing with my recent purchase of the ML500 is that it sounds very tame round the exhausts. I thought all V8's had
that distinctive "burble" Any advice on the best way to obtain it.

Non-AMG Mercedes V8's were built for refinement and minimal noise inside (and outside) the cabin. If you want the burble, you'll need to start removing selected parts of your exhaust, or replacing some or all of it with something more free-flowing. I personally haven't needed to do anything to mine, but then I have a C63S with a valved exhaust out of the box so it sounds pretty epic as it is.

I'm sure someone with more experience than me will be along shortly to advise, I would have thought.

As suggested it’s been acoustically tuned for refinement. Speak to a local exhaust shop about options. Removing the resonator and/or back boxes will change the sound quite dramatically, but not always in a good way. Steer clear of removing the cats.

Exhaust mod to liven it up. I've been hell bent to get an sl500 or other non-amg V8 convertible and I think you've given me much needed pause for thought ...
