Noisy aux input

I use a Drive Transmit Pro A2DP bluetooth adaptor so that I can stream music from my phone over bluetooth.

The device plugs into the cigarette lighter socket and can transmit over FM but also has aux-out.

On my old toyota aux-out and fm were both noise, and I could hear high-pitched whining with the pitch dependant on the engine revs.

On my Mercedes vito, the FM is pretty good but the aux is worse than before.

Aux-in from my daughters ipod is without noise.

What might the cause be? Ground earthing loops? Anything I can do to stop it, short of an isolation transformer? Extra supression capacitors across the cigarette socket?

When my wife gets back I'll try an external 12V supply to see if that stops it...

As you seem to have guessed, the cigarette 12v is indirectly connected to your alternator so their is noise boing created on your 12v line. This noise will change as your revs change.

You could try a capacitor from the 12v line to earth, this would allow any AC ripples on the power supply to be grounded to earth.
