Noisy Estate air compressor

Wonder if anyone can shed some light. On start up from cold my 93 E320 estate has a funny sound, much like the exhaust manifold has a hole in it (it seems the same as a compressor sucking air), then after 2 minutes or so it disappears, only appears again when the car is started from cold.

Am I correct in thinking it is the air spring compressor, and is it serious or do I leave it?

It's the air pump for emissions control when the engine is cold. Not all 280s and 320s have it

Ignore it - it shuts off after a minute or so

Wifes 320 does the same only for 20 secs or so mine only runes for a couple of secs from cold.
Its right at the front of the vee on ours dont know where it is on yours though!
