I noticed yesterday that the seat belt on the drivers side of my coupé doesn't lock under tension, neither will it rewind itself. Could the problems be related and is it a DIY job?

You can pick up a replacement cheaply from a breakers, swapping them is easy...
Very common for the mechanism to give up once the car is about 15 years old.
