I bought a 2012 (W166) ML class 3 weeks ago with the standard 19" alloy wheels, but I would like to upgrade the wheels to 20" using an online alloy wheel company. The alloy wheel I want to buy is a new wheel and an original Mercedes part and with the tyres cost around £2500. The trouble is my existing Tesco insurance say they won't pay out for the wheels if I am involved in an accident as they won't be bought and fitted by a Mercedes garage!

I have phoned Admiral and they will insure the wheels for a maximum of £500 if they are damaged in an accident but this is still way below what they are worth.

Does anyone know of any insurance company that will pay out and replace the wheels in this situation, or can I get separate alloy wheel insurance?

Thanks for any help!

Hi,

Feel free to give us a call for a quotation if you like. Our schemes for modified cars covers modifications on a like for like basis.

Regards,

Dan.

I should think that if you are having your car serviced by the supplying dealer , and these are genuine Mercedes wheels , you should be able to get the car's data sheet updated on the MB system to show the new wheels fitted to your car : the wheels then become 'part' of the car and its spec . Since the insurers would check against the car's VIN , the new wheels would show up as part of its spec and , arguably , they would be obliged to replace like for like .

Not sure if that would work. Privilege just took me for an extra £60 (negotiated down from £90) for upgrading my s211 16"s to genuine s211 18" wheels. I argued that these wheels were an optional extra for my car when new and had they been ticked on option form no one would e the wiser, but not interested "the car has been modified". At one point she even tried to tell me that we should be declaring all options on new cars because they are modifications from the standard basic model. At this point I told her to stop talking and put me in touch with her supervisor.

Apologies for the rant. Feel better now!

I have never seen a stand alone policy just for the wheels in 20 years of being in the insurance industry, I would say that best bet is to look in one of the specialist modified vehicles mags and see who advertises in the insurance section of the ads. Tbh Adrian Flux has been part of that niche market seen for a while so I hope they can help you
