So I have sold the SEC and on its last journey it wont start, fuel pumps are not doing anything, from research I see it may be the fuel pump relay or the over voltage relay, I have the print outs from the test and repair DVD I brought but it only shows the location up to `85, does anybody know the relay number on an `86? or if its the OVP where is that and how can I by pass for a get-me-home?

thanks guys

apologies if this should have been in the electronics section

Usually they are located beside the engine ECU behind the plastic cover behind the battery sort of under the scuttle. The fuel pump relay usually has KICKDOWN on it plus 8zyl for no of cylinders. The OVP relay usually has a fuse on the top of it ( it can blow). There may be minor differences to this depending on your model so dont take as gospel. dont bridge the relay for long or you may melt the wiring insulation since the main fuel pump supply is unfused?

OVP is located in the bulkhead, on the left of the battery if looking straight at it.

Fuel pump relay is located next to the fuse box. There are 2 relays there, the fuel pump one is the one closest to the engine.

I would check the OVP fuses first.

If you can locate the fuel pump relay it should be easy to link it out for testing purposes. From memory, pins 30 and 87 can be bridged to allow the pumps to run continously.

Is the fuel system even priming (ie, when the key is first turned to ignition, does the fuel system prime for a second or two)?

Good luck,

Will

I have 2 relays with 8zyl on them so I shall try them, I also have a relay with an integrated fuse on top so I assume thats the OVP, from playing last night with it I think that works so I can conecntrate on the fuel relay, you dont recommened bypassing the fuel relay for a 100 mile trip then? what if I bodged an inline fuse as work are a bit upset about this 20 year old barge sat outside?

You can bypass the fuel pump relay but you must remove the link when you stop the engine or the pumps will run continuously.

Also, the fuel pump relay may have a german translation of cold start, something like 'Kaltstartt' stamped on the top of it.

HTH,

Will

damn it!!! I was hoping the fuel pump relay would be wired to some sort of engine run, ie when I turned the engine off they would stop, there is no priming will,

OK so got one of the guys here to turn the ignition off and on while I put my hands on top of all the relays, they all seemed to click, the blade fuse on the OVP is ok as are all the other fuses, so I am none the wiser, I suppose it is possible that a relay can click on and off without switching the current.......

bypassed a relay with KickD written on it as it was making less clicks than all the others, melted the multimetre test lead a bit (thats its own fault for having the right size connectors) and she lives again! so now I know what oart I need to replace, buggered if I am going to pay £70+VAT for it if anybody knows of a cheaper place or has one hanging around, p/n is 002 545 33 05........

Cheers guys

they can sometimes be repaired if you remove the cover and resolder the connections on the circuit board which may be dry joints. Any electronics enthusiast/ shop should be able to do this for you for a couple of quid. There was a favorites post on this but I dont think the link is still active.

If you are not used to soldering electronic components ask any TV engineer, I would charge £10 to blanket solder and check the components cold for that

It was a dry solder joint that i just fixed!!! SHE LIVES AGAIN!!!!!!!!

I wish I knew more about cars then I might have made this repair 2 days ago!!

cheers for all you help guys as ever,

virtual beer for everybody

Well done, have a nana :bannana:

Such a good feeling when you fix something like that youself...

yeah feeling pretty smug, merc wanted 4 days and nearly £80, cost of repair done at work £0, ha ha!!

Nice one :bannana:
