Good Evening All :)

This is my first proper post after being a lurker on here for a very long time :)

I'm on the lookout for an R129 (SL500 ideally).....

Ideally would be the facelift version.....

It will be a car which will be garaged, and used in the summer only......

I've seen this one for sale......

99 T MERCEDES BENZ SL 500 R129 ~ FACELIFT ~ FULL SERVICE HISTORY ~ 2 KEEPERS ~ | eBay

Any thoughts on this?

It will need a bit of TLC to bring it back to its full glory......Driver bolster is a little worn, rear hood window is coming away, and there is a small amount of bubbling on the rear arch......

Is it worth going for this one and spending the money on it, or hold out for a mint one :)

Thanks in advance

I saw that one. Looks decent & very very well priced. Best to go and have a look at a few first to give you an idea/yardstick.

I spent about 18 months and looked at a dozen before buying mine. It is not perfect but only needs a couple of bits. It was the best I saw by some margin. It meant I had to pay a bit more but it was worth it.

If you're local to Potters Bar way you're more than welcome to pop by for coffee, a chat & a look.

I think after sleeping on it, i'd rather wait, and find one that doesnt need much done......forgot to mention that the above one, when bought didnt have a hard top, but current owner has bought one, but needs to be resprayed and i assume upholstered to match the interior......

I may take you up on that offer :O ;)

My one is up for sale in the classfields.

I saw that - not too keen on the colour though.....

Thanks anyway :)

Good plan. Makes sense not to rush. There is a big difference between one that had been looked after & had money spent compared to one that hasn't. The cheaper one can become less cheap very quickly & the better one will always be worth more so often pays to spend a smidge more to get a decent example. However some of the really low mileage minters can be popped on the market prospectively at silly silly money sometimes. Don't see the value in any of these unless they are super rare models.

Sure, you more than welcome to pop round anytime just let us know.

I personally feel the dark blues like Azurite & Black look good on an R129. Not a fan of the greens, reds or lighter colours...or gold. Prefer the grey leather interiors as well. Not a fan of the mushroom or black leather interior as makes it all a little dark.

My old SL60 was Azurite Blue with grey Nappa leather. The current SL500 is Obsidian Black with grey Nappa leather.

A few pics below of the current SL500. My old SL60 still has some pics on a temp site I had up here:

Thanks. Took a while to find as there are so many poor ones now.

I have been on the edge of keep or sell as don't get to use her as much as I'd like. Also I missed my SL60 so the SL500 was always a stop gap until I found another SL60. However I never found one that was decent or at a reasonable price or both. For some reason I still don't get the SL60's have become twice & thrice the price of a decent SL500. They aren't twice or thrice as good for sure.

Make me an offer I can't refuse and Iight be tempted [emoji6]

All the usual suspects you have mentioned already really. Also the forum is a good place to converse and maybe post a new wanted an.

If I come across anything off piste I will let you know as my brother is in the trade. PM me with your ideal colours/specs/miles/price etc. & I can tell him to keep his eyes out for one before it hits the market.

If i were you, I'd be looking for any old SL60, and be getting rid of the 500......the 60 is much more desirable :P

Yup, got the PM come through OK and just replied.

Thanks :)

It’s a minefield and they are getting more expensive. I gave up (bottled it) in the end and I’m now going for a petrol CLK convertible.

Haha!

I have a budget in mind and hopefully will try and stick to it! :)

Summer is a more expensive time to buy any convertible, of course.

I'm in no mad rush to purchase :)

Why is that? Do prices go up?
If a car has been on a forecourt since Feb for £10,000 is it now up for £11000 because summer is coming?
