Norwich Union - Pay As You Drive

So, a GPS system which logs your every move and uploads it automatically.

Only a short step to using that for Road Pricing and, oooh yes, monitoring your speed. So that monthly direct debit could cover Road Tolls & Speeding fines as well. Maybe could even be used to limit speed!

What a good idea. Government should think about that.

Hang on: they have already.

Yes, I know it already has it's more sinister side.

Could also be used by Police to track where all the crooks are....

...as well as all those dangerous free thinkers who question the wisdom of the nanny state........

What I dont understand is why they need to track your movements. If they're just trying to see how far people drive, why dont they send someone to come and look at your odometer once a year?

Sure some people would fiddle it, but the insurance companies could make some checks before they pay out - they're always looking for excuses not to pay anyway!

because they are dressing it up to say that if you drive in certain places at certain times your insurance would be less, hence the need to know your whereabouts.

Personally, I won't deal with Norwich Union or any other UK company that has moved it's call centres to another country in order to take advantage of cheap labour to save a few pounds at the expense of good customer service.

Hopefully nobody will think that my comments are meant to be racist in any way because they are not.

Im not sure you can blame companies for trying to save a few quid in what is an extremely competitive market. Internet companies are really giving them a ride for their money and they need to find ways of reducing costs. Yes there are some issues with moving abroad, but these should be resolved over time.
Any big infrastructure changeover will have its frictions at first...

I fear you may start to run out of companies (and banks) to deal with.

Hmm , lemme think about that one

not only will it prob track your speed and will give them ammo to void your claim because you were speeding at the time of the accident .. they can also work out where you park your car and adjust your premium accordingly .

Can't beat them with a stick comes to mind

I agree with you. In the US, CNN (in particular Lou Dobbs) ran a segment every night naming and shaming US companies who were outsourcing call centers etc overseas and putting Americans out of work.

Holding such views in the US is seen as patriotic. Here its seen as racist. Sad state of affairs.

I was with Norwich union for years and every year the premium went up. When I bought the Merc, I was mid term so I thougt it would be easier and cheaper just to stay with them , boy was I wrong as they bumped the premium up by £300. When renewal time came I changed to Chris Knott insurance. The premium now is £180 and strangely even Norwich Union is cheaper through Chris Knott.

Are NU suggesting this system so that they can charge customers less and make less money... I for one doubt that very much... this is an excuse to increase premiums,,,

Wee wifey is on the NU pay as you drive pilot.
It lasts for two years - it will be interesting to see that if it is adopted, what the renewal premium will be.
Its just another way for an insurance co, to take low risk drivers out of the insurance pool, in the same way that Esure may target older drivers.
