Not a good day - someone hit the back of my car!

Bad news about the car.....................

but have you got any photos of the house? :thumb:

I would agree - if you value the Car and you know its history - that is worth a lot - buy it back and get it fixed with someone conscientous who will be glad of Cash in the pocket!

I could bore you senseless with photos of the house....

We bought a late 60s bungalow from an old couple, stripped it and started again.
Ceilings re-boarded and skimmed, walls skimmed, oil fired single pipe system replaced with gas fired flow and return system, new UPVC windows and doors, single attached garage converted to office and utility, new kitchen, new bathroom, rewired, new hardwood internal doors, additional dropped kerb to create entry/exit system.

Initially we won’t see our money back but it will be our home and done just how we want it.

Courtesy car delivered today. I told them I needed an estate car, and they have delivered a Passat estate.

Car is ok but:

a) While considerably newer than my Mercedes, it is in my mind a backward step. The interior is tacky, and has too many buttons - not intuitive at all.

b) It is a diesel and sounds like a tractor.

c) It is a manual and I have spent the last 3 years loving the simplicity of driving with the auto box.

d) It has an electronic pushbutton parking brake, which you have to depress the footbrake to disengage the parking brake. How on earth are you supposed to do a hill start:confused: I am lucky Cambridgeshire is quite flat, but there are the odd hills I have to contend with.

If they do write off my car, I know for certain I could not live with one of these!

Had a message on my mobile this evening to phone the insurer about my car. Only picked it up after the office had closed however. I am hoping it is not the news that they will be writing it off....

Got me thinking though, if they do write it off, does anyone know how long insurers allow you to keep the courtesy car? I am concerned I could be in a rush to buy a new car which is not a good position to be in.

Given that it was the other party’s fault, would I be able to claim that I needed a reasonable time to source a replacement car? And does anyone have any idea on what I could claim was a reasonable time?

read the handbook - even an old person could operate a passat with elec hand brake and auto hold for hill starts. I know - Avis left one outside my house last week :)

Damn - Car is a Write Off - Advice Please

Today has got a lot worse:

Phone call from insurance company to let me know the car is a write off.

They have only offered me £6300 but to me the car is worth much more. I have just had £600 worth of servicing, £400 wheel refurb and 4 new tyres costing £600.

The repairs were estimated at £5033 by Robinsons Mercedes.

They have offered me the car for £1890 – but not being that mechanically minded I think I won’t be taking that option – I see that as too much risk as even if I can find someone to do it “cheaply” there may be underlying damage which may cost a lot more.

Now – I think I need to speak to my legal advice cover to see what my options are.

A final worrying thing is that they said that once they have made the payment to me, I can only keep the courtesy car for 7 days! How on earth can I source a car in 7 days while doing a full time job?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Sorry to hear that :( A bit more info about your car though as their offer does not seem bad
Try finding a car like yours advertised for more and ask them for a better offer
Not personal experince but from what I`ve heard, refuse their first offer

2005 C Class W203 estate. Avantgarde, FSH, 79000 miles, Sportspack, phone prewire, parking sensors. Wheels just been refurbed. Recent new Michelin pilot sport 3s all round with 6mm tread on all tyres.

Oh - and a smashed rear end (only recently added )

Just checked on Parkers guide and they suggest a value of £6300 from a franchised dealer. But to me the car was worth more as I was intending to keep it for the long term.

So the insurance company have offered bang on replacement value, so you can buy another.

They have offered £6300 so this is their starting point. Send them invoices of recent work, send them adverts of comparable cars and tell them what you want for the car.

If you can get them closer to £7k a bit of haggling could see you in a 2005/6 model, which wouldn't be a terrible outcome, although I appreciate you'd sooner it hadn't happened at all.

Not sure how important the 180 engine was to you but this 320 is loaded and only has 71k showing.
