How many handsets can I have actually connected at any one time? It seems that I can only have one and have to manually switch to the other (wife's) if needed when we are both in the car. Could have sworn it was al least two

There is a difference between the number of units that may be paired and those that may be connected.

You could not have two telephones connected i.e. in use at the same time but they could both be paiired to the head unut.

(With later systems that support Bluetooth streaming, you can have one handset connected for voice calls, and another for music streaming).
