Hi guys, I've never owned a Mercedes before or used a forum so bear with me + I'm dyslexic and jumble my words

I currently drive a 2008 Mondeo that I bough at 24 years old and I'm now looking to get something new and more interesting. I have just turned 26, insurance is dead cheap as I own a couple of old cars and everything on a multi car policy.
I have always loved the shape of the 04-11 SL and that is now exactly what I intend to buy. I'm not worried about doing some maintenence myself as I am mechanically minded, own a obd scanner and tools. I was also pleasently surprised by the ammont of space in the engine bay of a 350 that I looked at.

Can you guys run me through a typical list of general maintenence parts and the kind of prices I would be looking at for brakes and typical consumable components etc this will allow me to get an idea of what I should be buying.
Also any common or reoccurring faults on these cars?
Do the Sl350, 500 and AMG models vary massively in running and maintanence costs?

I'm not worried about fuel economy as I will hold on to my Ford, but It would be nice to know what I should be expecting from it. I used to daily drive a 4.0hse p38 range rover and I never want to experience reliability and repair costs like that again, hence all of my questions. I took my p38 in to a land rover specialist nine times in one year and it was just an awful mint condition pile of poo.

Would appreciate any help
Thanks,
Josh

If you've owned a P38 then you're well versed in the sort of automotive pain a R230 (the model you're looking at) can dish out. :thumb:

Hi and welcome. This question has been asked many times before. If you search R230 in the search box, you'll find a wealth of information there.

My neighbour has an R230 SL500 which has been lying on his drive for 6 months since the rear SAM under the back seat went on fire and many functions stopped working .

It has my R129 keeping it company for now , since mine has a broken gearbox , which I will attend to when the better weather comes around .

I currently own one and have driven alot of miles and maintained this vehicle thoroughly so hope my experience helps

Just buy one and enjoy it. If it costs a fortune you'll be the one who says they cost a fortune on web forums.
If it, like my old ones just went forever with no problems then you'll answer as such.
I've had 2 sl350s and an sl63 and they were bullet proof in my opinion.
Each car is different.
If you need to ask its jot for you.

When you find one you like or buy one, get it inspected buy an independent MB specialist. A 230 can easily empty your wallet in 10 seconds flat.

I had my R230 just over two years, only cost me the servicing costs so cheap motoring except........... I lost £9k in depreciation :wallbash:
