Hi

I see that the USA versions of the W210 get a 16pin diagnostic port down by the bonnet pull whereas we are left with the 38pin one under the bonnet.

I am aware that manufacturers often produce one loom for all functions, so whats involved with converting a 38pin car to a 16pin car - is all the wiring just tied up out the way somewhere?

US cars have a little ECU between the 16 pin socket and the rest of the car in order to comply with USA OBD-II regulations. But most code readers will talk to the engine management ECU if you use one of those adapters that markmifsud mentions. You won't be able to talk to other ECUs though.

Mercedes have almost no spare wiring in their vehicles.

Hi

yes I already have a 38 to 16 pin adapter cable (three wire) gnd 12v and engine ecu. Able to see ecu with ELM 327 device.

I was just investigating the possibility of having the port in the car, and also opens up the use of hand held obd diagnostic gizmos, all of which seem to have just the 16pin connections.

Is the USA OBD interface ECU retrofitable?
