Hi
I have, as far as I know, no problems but would like to have a basic OBD2 reader and reset tool for 1999 W208 with 38 pin socket under bonnet.
Would I be able to use a 38 pin to 16 pin adapter cable and a cheap reader/reset tool - I could get both for about 20 quid?
I have read other posts advising to buy a proper STAR diagnostic reader, but that would cost more than the car did.
As I say this is just in case a problem arises so I would be able to get any error codes without a trip to the garage.
Thanks for your help and suggestions

I appreciate it's not the same car, but my cheap OBDII reader from Amazon (ca £15) can read all the generic codes on my W209 CLK.

I really only upgraded to the iCasoft because I was seeing SRS errors, and the cheap reader can't reset those. - So assuming there's nothing funny about the W208, the i980 would be my recommendation.

Nothing funny. As you said - only engine and generic codes, no abs/srs/transmission/etc. I got the cable adaptor and the bluetooth ELM327 scanner for a few bucks on ebay. Does what it's supposed to do, which is not much.

By the way, I couldn't manage to erase codes with any app with this scanner.

I think mine could read gearbox codes, but they're somewhat meaningless without the help of Google. - At least with the iCarsoft you get a bit of explanation with the code.

Is it the real code that you can find in the booklet or is it a generic alias?

I have the icarsoft MB11 and it's pretty good for the money, used it on my CLK and sussed out and ABS fault on the Sprinter.

Thanks for the input - have ordered a good tenners worth of equipment off a certain Chinese website and look forward to the experiment. I've gone for a 38-16 pin lead and a VERY cheap bluetooth adapter to connect to android phone. Will let you know what transpires!
cheers

Well nearly a year has gone by and I just tried the bluetooth thing and adapter cable and.....not alot. The bluetooth thing glows red (an LED I hope) and that's about it. So you're spot on W20855AMG. And thanks for the offer racpat..but has anyone tried the Autel MD801? They're supposed to work on 1995 - 2008 Mercs. Any info?
Cheers
