Hi,

I just wondered if there were any ODB readers that work well with my Vito 2008 115CDI. I have heard of the Star diagnostic, but wondered if there was anything I could get to at least do a basic diagnostic?

Hi,
There is an iCarSoft i980 or their newer model which the MB V2.
The i980 has been around for a few years and is very good. It costs around £90.
The MB V2 is relatively new. It has a bigger screen and more functionality. It costs around £135.
Both of those will read the OBD for any car but are specifically focused towards Mercedes.

I would think that both would work well for your Vito.

There are others which I am sure are good too, including some that will allow you to view the diagnostics on your phone.

Ecp sell pretty basic readers for £30 ALSO on ebay....

The cheap ones don’t really do too much. I would recommend the icarsoft units as short of a full MB star unit they are about as good as they get.

As above.

Although, confusingly, after the iCarsoft i980 and before the iCarsoft MB v2.0 there was also the iCarsoft MB II.....

Hi

I bought one of these and an old Lenovo laptop off flea bay which is exclusively used for scanning the car and others I have in the household. It's a Chinese copy of a well known system. Whole lot cost me £115 and has saved me and the family a small fortune. It also gives you live info of various systems.

Another vote for the above knockoff. The software doesn't cover some newer cars and the 2015r3 is I think really 2013. I've also tried a number of cheap bluetooth readers but found that while they would read codes from my 2009 model they wouldn't clear the codes You can get these for less than a fiver though so still worth having and you can get free software for most phones.

Another vote for iCarsoft MB v2. 0, around £130 off eBay but they very quickly pay for themselves - useful for checking out a car before you commit to purchase...

If all you want to do is read the codes and be able to reset them then a cheap ELM 327 bluetooth ODB2 reader (under£5) and the Torque app on an Android phone will do the job.

Worth a try before buying anything more expensive if thats all you want to do. If you were closer you could have just tried mine. Maybe someone local who has one and could help.

I do want to just be able to read and clear codes, but want something that works on MB. what extra can the others do, other than read and clear codes?

Generic ODB2 readers can only read the ECU codes. If you want to read or reset codes on any other system e.g. SRS, you'll need something more specific such as the iCarsoft units.
These specialised units can also read data in real time from many of the control units which is something that is often overlooked during fault diagnosis.

For smarts (which if serviced at MB dealer would see STAR being used) Delphi DS150E is recommended. So, I Googled and found this page >> delphi ds150e software - Google Search

and first link >> https://www.car-auto-repair.com/autocom-delphi-ds150e-cars-trucks-software-free-download/ offers it for free.

Why would it be offered for free? Trustworthy? Do all/any of the 'knockoffs' require a designated lap top that is never subsequently connected to the internet (or at least devoid of anything that you cannot risk being hacked)?

There may be a simpler way to my objective though. My problem (if it becomes my problem that is) is a car with no keys (they were stolen/lost in a burglary) which cannot be locked by any other method than by the remote on the key.
Presumably I can buy the key (by providing VIN and proof of ownership) but it would still need programming to the car and transporting the car to a dealer is not a viable option. Any idea as to my best option here? Is removing the ZEE and key receiver and taking it to someone with the kit to code/programme viable?

If I were to forgo the physical locking aspect, could I programme any key that was issued with a smart? Is there anything else programmable as a 'plipper'?

This is an illegal clone.
Bitdefender removed all inclusive Malware - avoid; nothing so good is really free!!!

Downloading the pirated copy won't help you much anyway - you won't be able to use the Delphi software without the OBDII multiplexer.
