I currently own a CLK 270 CDI (BRABUS D4) which I love but wish it had xenons. I am after some advice on how easy it is to add xenons to my car and the likely cost. Has anyone on here done it and is there a step by step guide with photos anywhere on the forum? My car has auto lights and already has headlight washers so I will not need to add these as I know that headlight washers are a legal requirement for xenon headlights. I would like OEM as I want to do it properly but is it going to be hideously expensive if I use OEM gear or are there any good but cheaper alternatives?

Thanks in advance.

OEM is very easy for the lights, plug and play (with a bit of STAR coding )

Xenon lights are £900 each from MB. You might find some on ebay but check they are for RHD!

You will also need to fit the auto-levelling system for the lights, sensors attached to the front and rear anti-roll bars, loom also needed. Cost approx £150

There are no legal alternatives...

Best bet is to buy some 2nd hand bi-xenons from ebay or breakers( approx £400), then decide whether to add auto-levelling (axle sensors, wiring looms & fitting £££).
-they can be levelled manually...

You beat me to it, Peter!
Was the £150 for the fitting, or did that include any parts??

The legalities of DIY-xenons, even using OEM equipment have been discussed here before - basically it is very difficult, if not impossible, to do legally

I have a rhd xenon (pass side, but let me check tonight) when i was slowly sourcing them for my w209 clk320....you are welcome to make me an offer and then source the other side. Happy to let go v cheap...

nice to have the D4 i imagine!!

PM me.

In this case, not so difficult; the OP already has washers, so only needs self levelling & the lights to be fully legal

Just to be clear... that is a total of £1950... plus fitting yourself of extra on top for someone else to fit them?

Not sure if Smatt got all of that when he said he thought it was cheap!

Thanks to everyone for their replies so far. Forgot to say that I would ideally like Bi-Xenons but would settle for xenons. If I were choose Bi-Xenons is this the same process and would it cost any more. Also if I am able to locate some xenon headlights myself, then how much would you be looking at for getting them fitted by someone including the self levelling sensors? Would a good independent be able to do this? BTW what is STAR, I am guessing this is similar to VAGCOM. Does anyone on here have this and what can you do with it e.g. my car has electronically folding mirrors but they do not automatically close when you lock the car. Is it possible to programme them to close automatically with STAR. Apologies if I am asking a lot of questions but I am just curious as to what you can do with STAR.

The head lights are fairly easy to swap- a competent DIY er can do- they are simply plug & play, but you do need to loosen off the front bumper to get access.
Any MB dealer will be able to 'enable' the headlights & good independents should also be able to do it

I did, thanks!
I bought my lights 2nd hand so did not pay £1800 for them.
Ps if anyone is interested in new oem ones, you can get a pair for approx £1000

My god, that is bloody expensive then! I thought they were < £1K factory fit??:eek: :)

Sorry - the one I have is a bi-xenon (as in clear glass with visible projector as seen on w209 cars with out halogen lights)

Sorry for the confusion but that is ideal as I would prefer a bi-xenon light over a normal xenon light. I have added you to my contacts list and tried to PM you but it will not let me for some reason, is this because I have insufficient posts?

Agreed- the full(if required) retrofit cost for lights, looms, sensors, bumper, washers etc can come to £4-5K at a dealers!
Done sensibly (ie lights +/- levelling), should be £300-£1000 with 2nd hand light units

I'm not sure if xenon and bi-xenons are interchangable. Would it be dependant on the age of the car? i.e. what was an option at the time. Possibly down to the front SAM and what it can handle?

Hi,
On the W202, the Xenon light package was offered as an accessory, the complete kit was less than half the retail price of all the items included in the kit, all the required items for a "legal" fit were included, ask your local MB dealer, as the accessory kit for the 209 might still be available, unlike the W202.
