Decided that my 7yo iMac G5 is due for replacement so I am heading off to the Apple Store with JSWMBO (as she means I get a 12% Higher Educational discount) to buy a new machine. I'm also opting for the heavily discounted 3yr Applecare.

Looking at the 27" i5 model and have already ordered 16GB of DD3 RAM from Crucial to upgrade it next week.

Anybody got any pointers I should note ?

Can you get me 2lb of Granny Smiths please :D

Be careful what you wish for at the next Dine-Out.

I could easily find a Granny with the surname Smith.

One granny, one bag :D

Hi,Mercmanuk has one for sale(I think) Imac 27 three weeks old,if thats the same thing. Listed in forum.

Too expensive IMO as I don't need all the software he is supplying.

By strange coincidence, I replaced our 4 x company G5s with 4 x iMac 27" units albeit 8GB RAM and i7 + 2GB graphics card. I got them for £1791 each with AC back in September last year.

What you might find at first is the screen is MASSIVE.

Then you will get used to it and think the G5 is shyte.

We had 20" Cinemas on our G5s which look tiny in comparison.

Nothing to watch out for - make sure you patch Lion to 10.7.2...

I would check if you AC is auto-enrolled. Otherwise, enrol it straight away!

I also upgraded the RAM to 16MB on my 27" iMac and it was not as simple as they show.

Firstly removing the old RAM by pulling the plastic flap proved impossible, they are fixed in with concrete or so it seemed. I used a needle point pliers in the end, and that got the blighters out.

Then pressing the new RAM cards in was fun as well, tried as much force I could apply with my fingers and risked spraying blood all over the RAM area. Twice I thought the RAM was mounted properly but the computer proved me wrong. Next I used a screwdriver with a round blank tip and with more force than I thought safe and then some more, the reluctant blighters eventually surrendered and clicked into place.

Ended up with 16MB's of ram all being read by the computer. The job just took a lot more force to remove and insert than I ever expected.

Best of luck with yours.

I also upgraded the RAM to 16MB

It doesn't seem that long ago to me when this figure was actually the case and cost £1000 a la days of the 486...

Is this the integrated model? A colleague was swearing in several language recently after having to take his faulty iMac to the Apple shop for warranty repair twice... it's not very convenient when you need to carry the 27-inch screen just for the shop to replace a faulty memory module!

Great machine Steven. Although you may want to go for a Mac Pro as thats what you had before and you could keep your old screen so cost wise roughly the same for a more powerful machine?

Yep, it's the iMac.

Factory memory comes out and replaced by 4*4GB Crucial RAM next week. Will therefore have spare cards to hot-swap if there is a problem although I've never had a problem with Crucial memory in the past.

Doesn't bother me if it needs to go back for warranty work. At least it's something that simply fits back into the box and into the boot of the car - it would be worse if it was a 50" TV !

Service from the Apple Store was superb. Lad even carried it out to the car for me - that's service you don't get often !!!

Didn't have a Mac Pro - although I would certainly love one but couldn't justify the cost as it's only a home machine. I have/had the G5 (iSight) iMac

Great user CP by the way

Shows you how much I know about Macs. I thought yours was a separate tower and therefore a pro?

This is why I suggested enrolling the AC straight away.

Once you have this, should you have a failure, you can also orchestrate a collection from a local authorised repair place.

We had a logic board (aka motherboard) go in one of ours and I did just that - glad I got AC now. Without it, it would have a been a trip to Bluewater...

I'm 15 minutes from my local Apple Store so no real hassles if something goes array.

Got the 3yr cover so all good for a while.

Crucial RAM arrived and duly fitted without blood, sweat or tears.

Happy bunny !!!

As the dude from the Honda Accord advert a few years back said, "Isn't it nice when things just...work?"
