My local dealership is hosting an AMG day tomorrow with the option to drive a number of different models. Pre-booked a slot in the SLS coupe, option to try the roadster but it doesn't appeal quite as much.

I will let you know what I think.

Enjoy! btw most the reviews on the roadster state it drives better than the coupe just doesn't have the iconic doors.

Maybe I will get a chance to form an opinion!

Cheers

A Black SLS passed me this afternoon westbound on the A3 near Raynes Park.

It sounded lovely.

No doubt a footballer!

A lot of these things going on at dealers at the moment, AMG sales must be slowing especially for the higher end models which are way overpriced.

Still, a good day out though...

Quite handy!

I was lucky enough to take part in one of these days at Lincoln a couple of months ago. I drove the SLS Coupe, and the CLS AMG.

I had arranged to drive the SLS Roadster, but it had 'technical problems'. However the coupe was just fine, a bit more of a novelty due to the doors.

The main thrill is of course the noise, as although fast, you can't really push it too hard on public roads. The overriding impression was though of a car that could be driven every day, as easily as a TT. I would certainly consider one if I ever won the lottery, and prefer its concept and execution to the Italian supercars.

However there were a couple of minor issues - both related.

The steering wheel seemed exactly the same as the one in my wife's new B Class Sport. It's a real nice wheel in a £25K B Class, but I somehow expected more in the SLS.

Continuing on the theme, though I guess this applies to most supercars, at about £170K, I'd struggle to avoid a close look at an R8 or Vantage, and buy the CLS AMG with the change. However I guess that the price will ensure some further level of exclusivity, which is perhaps more important than VFM at this end of the market.

The CLS was amost too refined and quiet for an AMG, and you'd have to wonder about the advantage over the V6 Diesel, but that's my real world, salaried, Yorkshire head talking again!

Well, a big thanks to Jardine motors what a great couple of hours still grinning now....big welcome grub and drink as required.

The line-up was slightly different than above but was made up of the following.

C63 saloon with PPP
C63 coupe
E63 saloon
ML63
S65
SLS coupe
SLS roadster

I arrived a bit early so while I waiting for my spin in the SLS I was offered a run out in one of the others so.....

This was my first ever drive of a 65 and a a new long wheelbase S65 I must say is a good way to break your duck :-). The car had more gadgets than James Bond but they paled into insignificance when you put our foot down.....it didn't have the frantic urgency of my c63 but the way it picked up and just went was amazing it just picked up so quickly and launched its self down the road, there was a lot less body role than I was expecting which was good as the route was around fast country lanes punctuated with a couple of long straights and some really tight corners. I was so impressed at the way such a large ship let you drive very progressively, I especially liked the way the seat electronically gripped you as you corned hard, the only slight negative an it was only slight was the car although handled being thrown around it wasn't what it was designed for and after 20mins of driving the breaks felt like they were struggling a little bit. This car is great and I could really see myself on an autobahn eating the miles in this but as I don't need to travel across continental Europe there would be a lot of cars a would look at adding to my wish list 1st.

Next up was the SLS coupe.

This was the car I was really looking forward too. It did looking menacing in black but I think a classic silver or red works best.. Same route and I was given plenty of opportunity to stretch its legs. :-) :-) i want one ........ I was wondering what another 120bhp and diet would do to my car! Wow it really flys and the sound is off the scale brutal compared to mine. I was driving down some quite narrow country lanes and I have read that these feel really wide, didn't notice at all to busy smiling foot down and making a racket....I was amazed how well it handled and what a step up it was (it should be I know nearly 3x the price of mine).. My man from Mercedes was great and once he removed his hands from his eyes seemed to nearly enjoy it as much as me.. It' was so quick, well balanced and much better than all the other new AMG's I have driven. I want one :-)....

Ok one more go.

Next up....

The SLS roadster..

Well I preferred the colour..... I wasn't sure what to expect if you were offered one ignore the price hat old you go or cab or gull? Before this drive I would have said gull!!!

Same car same brutal acceleration, same grip (did have to catch it once but I think I was getting a bit cocky), more insane noise (even louder in h open air) plus the sun beating down on my head.... How does it compare to the gull? They are both great cars both went and handled like not much else I have driven, the cab is the loudest car I have had the pleasure to drive just beating the coupe which is the second loudest. Which one ????? I would have both ;-)

A few more pictures

Thanks again to the Jardine team had a real blast..

Great write up!

S65L for me any day of the week, including over an SLS, which does nothing for me.

Great car but apples and pears and I like both just the 65 would never be used for what it's designed if I was lucky enough to own one. The SLS I would use more of.

Missed a pic..
