...so I thought I should say hi.

An early W209 (C209??) with the 2.6 M112. Looks very promising, only the second owner, low mileage, patchy recent history because it's hardly been driven but looks in lovely nick.

Anyway, I'll try and stop myself from jumping in feet first (serial car buyer) because my recent history with older German cars isn't good. My comfort zones are usually Sweden or Japan.

I'll probably be posting later to say I've bought it...

Welcome !

Welcome!

That engine and automatic transmission are very reliable.

Nice looking car.

Just checked the MOT history and it looks ok, but there appears to have been an oil leak for the last 9/10 years and the rear brake pipes may well need replacing they have been reported as coroded for a few years but covered in grease so the tester cant easily check.

Might be worth a quick inspection yourself.

Thank you.

The old boy I've bought it off has owned it for the last 17 years. One owner previously. Described as a bit of a garage queen (the car, not him) he's also a retired HGV master tech with many years experience including quite some time working on Jensons of all things. Looking at the history it hasn't really wanted for anything and it's a mix of main dealer, independent and him doing the work himself. He struck me as most mechanics do, that if it needed doing he'd do it but also taking a view on what's important and what's not so much. Does that make sense?

Regarding the oil leak, it's actually a slight transmission leak. Something to do with a valve? I'll investigate further but apparently a couple of years ago the car was taken to a gearbox specialist for oil and filters and they advised for such a small leak to leave it as it'll do it again. Common on these? I don't know but he just checks it and tops up occasionally. I assume he has one of those aftermarket dipsticks. I was surprised to see the car didn't come with a proper one.

Cracking looking car that.

Any more info? Spec, price and condition??

Thank you. Proper Mercedes colour too imo.

It's in good nick. No corrosion I could see. Decent branded tyres but I'll check the dates. A few little scuffs and the interior needs a bit of a clean. CLK240 Avantgarde with heated black leather. If MB used leather then.

Faults found were non-operating headlight washers, buttons on the A/C were a bit nasty and the interior lights don't come on when you open the door though do work if you flick the switch. As mentioned elsewhere the head unit is aftermarket and not to my taste but I've sourced a period Blaupunkt Koln.

All in all what I'd expect for a car of this age and mileage. Picking it up tomorrow and got it for £3350. If I can sell my 9-5 for that I'll be a happy bunny.

Pictures to follow.

Yep....my one was like that...I also thought it was faulty when I bought it!!

Oh and the photochromatic gubbins on the driver's side mirror has gone dark.

Such elegant cars. I consulted to a big corporation that offered these as company cars to their young “executive directors.” They loved them

Thank you both!

Anyhoo, drove very well. Picked it up from Mansfield and only a little hop up the motorway back to Sheffield. Treated it to a tank of V Power too ;)

Nothing of any real concern to report. The slight exhaust blow mentioned on the MOT needs looking at, tyres or very good but soooooo old so I'll probably end up changing them. Mirror glass needs replacing ASAP as I can hardly see out of it. Foot operated parking brake needs adjusting as it's barely biting. And service stuff pending. Oil, filters, all that gubbins. Looking forward to the next few weeks...

Overall rather pleased. No doubt going from no miles over the last couple of years to being a daily will shake out some gremlins but hey, that's all part of the fun isn't it?
