I'm heading down after work on Friday with SWMBO and her parents for a weekend.

Going to head out for dinner on Friday after we book into the hotel and planning to spend Saturday exploring. Sunday will be a leisurely breakfast and a trip to the local MacArthur Glen to stock up on holiday shorts and tees ( I am heading to Turkey next month for a fortnight :D ) before heading back up the road.

Thinking of taking the City Bus tour in the morning and strolling around in the afternoon. Not planning on driving anywhere on Saturday - car will remain parked up.

Any hidden gems or 'must-dos' ?

Tornado is supposed to be hauling the Cathedrals Express to York and Durham on the Saturday 13th -- only published times I've seen are that it is due at york for 1311 on the north bound leg and 1736 on the southbound.

One of my favourite cities, usually visit when I take the Integrale on its annual pilgrimmage nearby to Walkers, often just spend the time browsing shops and eating.

Jorvik, Railway and City musueums all worth a visit but possibly still bustling with school parties this weekend.

Might pass you on the way, we are heading up to Glasgow this weekend for a wedding.

500 miles each way!!

A trip down the river about an hour is worth it to take the weight off your feet after shopping. Visit the historic Shambles but always busy. If you like proper beer and a bit of quiet cross the Ouse bridge to the South side and go in the Golden Ball or Ackhorne.
Museum gardens is a nice place to have a sandwich near the Minster or in the Minster gardens themselves.
The Holy Trinity Church is unchanged in 200 years and hidden off Goodramgate in the city centre if you like that sort of thing.
Jorvik Centre (pay) if you wait for a while, Castle museum (pay) or free Railway Museum.
Lots to do depends on your interests.
If you like Indian food the Viceroy of Indian is reasonable.

Visit York Official Tourist Information. Book York hotels, B&Bs and Self-catering. Discover attracti
Golden Ball - York Camra Pub of the Year 2004

Enjoy the visit the weather at least looks warmer.

I had lunch at the Veccia Scuola (Old School) in the centre of York.
A little commercial, but very nice.

2 "hidden gems" where you won't see many tourists:

If you walk into the city at Bootham Bar (Bars are gates in the city walls). After about 15 paces there is a tiny alley just before a pub, on the left-hand side. Go down it, despite the fact that it looks unappealing. It brings you into Precentors court, a historic lane you can walk up with the Minster framing your view at the end, but no-one else around. Only about 50 yards, but a treat. There are quite a few little alleyways in York worth investigating if you spot them.

For a lunch / coffee the city cinema cafe is great. A wall of glass and outside balcony on the river, good food, prices and service. Much better than coffee chains. Great chips!

Enjoy!

Further update on this. Not that great. The train is currently down as terminating at York 1306 arriving platform 10. Looks like it will move out to sidings at 1342 - arriving back in platform 10 for 1704 with departure back to London 1736.

(Not that great because IMO York is best for this sort of thing if train arrives in platform 5 northbound so you can get a decent view from platform 3/5 under original arched train shed).

I think I've measured the Riverside_Cafe bar. Looked a great place for a drink.

Is there anyway to find out what time she passes through Doncaster?

Is there anyway to find out what time she passes through Doncaster?

Doncaster northbound 1225 - 1229

Realtime Trains

Note that the train his held just before Doncaster between 1206 and 1221. There's always a risk that it could be allowed to proceed into Doncaster early if the signallers are sorting out other traffic running off schedule and decide that's the best option.

Doncaster southbound 1809 - 1811

Realtime Trains

Because it's a steam charter it's shown as 'diesel' (I suspect really that just means non-electric).
