Cam chains on this appear to be a rattler , il get it star tested as he said this should tell him if it is or not plus any other issues it might have i dont know about..However the 2.5 - 3 grand quoted to fit the chains , cogs etc etc means if this is indeed the case its probably scrap

Its running fine at the moment so il just use it around town until next month when i get the star test done .Not a good day all in all

Sorry to read this but the MoT history does suggest it has suffered from a lack any TLC over the years.
I hope you didn’t pay much for it.

it does indeed , it was fairly cheap so i took a punt - probably not my wisest move if im honest

How old is this car and how did you know it had had no tlc? Can this issue be seen in advance?

Markjay - Engines a 1.8K , The dreaded M271 lump . Knightrider2691 , its a 56 plate ( 2006 ) with 126,000 on it , no service history and cheap - i didnt know about the chain issue at the time or i wouldnt of touched the bloody thing , bodywork is nigh on mint as is the interior , all the toys work , the only things wrong are the passenger mirror ( wont fold in as its busted although the glass moves OK ) and this chain issue - which has probably killed it off :(

does the chain rattle on cold start? and for how long? my old car clk200 rattled for about 1 second then was fine

You get a feint rattle for about 5 seconds on cold start up ( stood 10 hours or so ) , you cant hear it in the car and i can only hear it with the bonnet up and my ear to a bit of pipe sat on the cam cover . after this its gone and when warm its silent

It does seem rather unloved

I think you're worrying too much if that's all you hear. Leave the bonnet closed and throw away the piece of pipe...

It has 126K miles on it; lots of engines make a little noise on cold start after that sort of mileage. If you go looking for unusual noises on an engine that well-used, you'll find them.

I hope the Star test sets your mind at rest.

If the engines fires on all cylinders, then there's no valve damage (and obviously no piston/conrod damage).

So you could either get the timing gear replaced preemptively and have peace of mind, or you could drive the car as is until it gives up the ghost, though in this case you need to take into account the downside of a potential unexpected fatal (engine-wise) break-down at an inconvenient time or location.

(Personally I would either fix it or flog it, but I wouldn't want to drive around in a car that has the potential of leaving me stranded at any time)

I guess its like self diagnosing an illness on yourself on tinternet , you start with a slight sniffle and by the time youve read up on stuff youve got a week to live  . il get the star test done ASAP and go from there , bet its not been tested or cleared for years . Its running perfectly BTW :)

Plan is to get the star test done then go from there . i wont know anything for certain until then , it starts and runs perfectly with no electricery gremlins . we will see i guess :)

Reminds me of friends and relatives who've gone into a panic about "life-threatening" issues, and then rumbled on past 80, with a minor fettling. While others, seemingly in better condition have....broken down on the roadside.

I wouldn't jump to too many conclusions until you've taken proper adivice (from that Star test)

Even if it is a mortally wounded, runners can still have a significant value to breakers just for parts in this EBay era.

.

Star test booked for Thursday , il call it diagnostic day rather than dooms day . its not had a main dealer service since 09 so its probably full of rubbish

Star test done . Took 20 minutes to download and clear all the stuff on it then once cleared retested to see what came up.
Two faults showing .
First was the Crank sensor - i had a feeling this might crop up as every now and again all the dash warning lights would come on for 1/2 second and the engine would cough .
Second fault was the alarm module , I replied " What alarm !!! " , he said the one thats not working :p, apparently it can drain the battery over time like this .
Anyway the cam chain / timing / sprockets etc are fine . Ive left it there for them to sort these two things out as driving with an iffy crank sensors not a good idea .
So all in all a good result :)

Ingrid is back

New crank sensor , alarm module and an oil / filter / cabin filter change . il get the auto box oil and filter done at some point

:)

I'm happy to be able to say "told you so"... It's a good 'un after all, then. :thumb:
