I've been thinking about having a re-jig of the family motoring just lately, which was started by my wife, funnily enough.

She isn't keen on the profile of the S211 and is wanting a LR Discovery3/ML 320 CDi (haven't we been here before?). Anyway, this would then mean that the Disco/ML would be 'her' car to ferry the little Sweetpeas about in and this would free me up to get 'my own' car.....

Now that she's planted the seed, I can't stop looking for an E320 CDi Sport Saloon; it's driving me mad. I've only had the estate about 3 months and it is a fantastic all-rounder (the rear TV is a God-send to keep the children quiet), but once I get a whiff of another car and my head is turned, I'm gone....

What do we reckon?

Keep the S211 and buy the missus what she wants?

Sell the S211, buy the missus what she wants and ge myself an E320 CDi Sport Saloon?

Sell the S211, buy an E320 CDi Sport and tell the missus to catch the poverty wagon?

Keep the S211 and sell the missus?

As ever, all views are appreciated to help me out in my quandry....

What draws you to the Sport?

I have a Saloon sport and whilst I am young and have only ever previously had sporty cars I can appreciate that the styling of the sport does come with some negatives ( tyre cost, compromised ride, worse mpg ) and I sometimes like the idea of a more comfortable Mercedes and anyone like me who has a family is always in need of the extra room / versatility of an estate.

The grass isn't always greener I guess is what I'm trying to say.

Exit the Autotrader website and have another glass of wine would be my recommendation. :)

Spend the available on that "project" we talked about at the bar during our "testing". You know it makes sense....

Well I personally love the look of the Sport which is why I bought it, the wheels and exhaust trims do make it stand out from every other e-class on the road (AMGs not included) but it's definitely not without a compromise (the ride and approx £220 for each tyre)

I also had to have a ball-joint replaced on mine very recently when it's only covered 40k which the specialist doesn't agree with me is likely to be down to the 18"s but I still think that may be the case.

I wouldn't even consider a saloon, I think the estate looks a far younger car and hasn't dated like the saloon has.
I would never own a saloon, always have to be coupe or estate for me, saloon is just too middle aged sales rep for my liking.

You buy a hatch when your 20/25.
Then you buy the coupe when your 25/30 as you can afford the insurance.
By 35/40 you have a family and need an estate for the mountain bikes and surf boards.
By the time you get to 45/50 you are back on your own, no kids at home, too fat for surfing and mountain bikes and so you buy the saloon.
You then hit 60 and are so bored of cars that you buy the Porsche, realise you are 30 years too late and sell it and by a 4x4.

I'm probably wrong, but that is my view on cars and when you buy them, sport and saloon just doesn't go imho.*

Just kidding of course. ;)

I'm loving the colour of your car in the album.
My previous E Class was the same colour :thumb:

Well said, gizze. And it gets even worse at 70 yrs old :dk::)

Hello

I don't think the saloons look as good as the estates and the estates far more suited to a family life...

The sport, I like the look of but unless you keep the exhausts trims clean it looks a mess at the back and the wheels look fiddly also to keep clean. I'm more than happy with the steath look of mine... Doesn't look 'sporty' but goes pretty well for what I need (D6 helps).

I / We are in a similar boat only the other way round as I have the S211 as we need a big car to tow the van. My wife wouldn't want to drive that as a daily so her B class does very well doing the daily runs.

We have decided when our youngest is able to climb in there own seat we will change hers for a CLK or similar convertible. I will then have the sensible family tug (may still be the e-class who knows) and she can have the sporty / weekend car.

I see little point having a S211 and a E211 of the same type car?

this or a disco? and the old model ie not the latest disco 3 is pretty plastic fantastic inside,

Buy a new set of shiny wheels and a badge. Far cheaper and you can use your old ones for winter tyres. :D
I've already priced up; front & rear AMG bumpers and some 18" AMG wheels and I couldn't possibly justify the cost.

Funny you should say that, because that's who the wife thinks estates were made for!

Coupe yeah, but saloon??

I think I would get a nice CL if the other car is going to be practical.
