Oil advice

Hi All,

Going to start servicing my 14 plate E250 diesel myself moving forward. Looking for recommendations for engine oil to use. I realise it's got to be to certain specs but there's obviously a lot of brands out there.

Thanks

My personal view is that any oil the meets the relevant spec is fine.

I have no doubt that there are differences in quality between various oil products, but for everyday use they are insignificant.

If you are not racing the car, and not running it under extreme conditions etc (e.g. taxi usage etc), then any differences in long-term engine wear between different oil products will be immaterial - your car will likely end its service life and get scrapped long before the engine will give-up due to wear anyway.

The key is to use an oil that meets the MB Spec Sheet for your car, and change it regularly.

Others on here may differ - I know that some members swear by certain brands of oil, so read all the advice and make-up your own mind.

For your engine, you will need oil meeting MB Spec Sheet 229.51 or 229.52. The latter is the newer standard, so given a choice it will be preferable, but either one will do. The viscosity to go for is either 5W-30, or 5W-40, or 0W-40.

In terms of brands, MB-branded oil is going cheap these days, so worth looking it up on eBay (but try and buy only from MB dealers selling on eBay - there have been cases of counterfeit oil being sold). Also, if you will be doing the servicing DIY from now on, you could buy a 20L container for further saving.

Another reliable source of engine oil is Opie Oils:

Also, if servicing the car yourself, keep in mind that (a) other items may need to be replaced, in addition to engine oil and filter, and (b) a 'service' isn't just engine oil and filter change, it also includes a list of checks that need to be done.

You can use this website to generate a list of all service items and checks due for your car on its next service:

Don’t forget to ask your local Mercedes main dealer parts counter for a price on oil - and try others in the area - mine sells it at around the same price as those on eBay, and if you’re servicing and repairing it yourself then having a relationship with your local parts counter will be useful 👍🏻

Why not use the MB genuine stuff, it’s about as cheap as it gets and seems good oil. I.m now using it in my other half’s fiat and my Honda lawnmower, both of which were audibly improved by MB synthetic.
