2005 W215 CL500.
I took the engine cover off to-day to replace the thermostat. I have a lot of oil around the top of cylinder 5 ( counting from front back). What does/might this mean?

Thanks.

If it's diesel it's probably a leaky leak off pipe, if it's oil it's probably the breather, if combustion gasses it's a leaking heat shield.

It looks like oil; black etc. Is there a breather on each cylinder? Can it just be cleaned?

Thanks for the reply DM. Did you see my other post re: thermostat? Any pearls of wisdom?

I've just run the engine. When holding my hand over the effected cylinder I can feel little puffs ( of air?) and a sound like escaping air also?

The injector seal needs replacing and the seat re-cut. Get it done asap as it can get much worse.

It is probably the solidified combustion gas the oil you have found because that is how mine started i thought it was just spilt oil when i had topped it up so i wiped it off, a few month later i was met with the over flowing prescene of black death when i lifted the engine cover "coal like substance".having trouble with my seats on a couple of injectors as well cleaned them up using a cutting kit.emery cloth etc and still get the annoying ticking sound . going to try annealing the new washers to see if that helps . Dont really want to take the head off due to scaryness

its an injector seal.all cdis have this problem.it will cost you about £40 to get it done.thats provided the injector comes out easy.sometimes they need to be eased out over time so they dont break so you could be without the motor for a day

That "ticking" is normal.

took me 3 days of soaking and swearing/mercedes hating to get one injector out . All the so called diesel speacialists i talked to where i lived said i would never get it out . one even said to take the head off and hit it out with a hammer:eek: I ended up having to strip the injector appart and screw a slide hammer kit into it to get it out after 3 days a soaking in penatrating oil .

Booked it in for tomorrow. £50 quoted if no problems. Oh well, could be worse. Thanks for all your help, and consensus opinion.

(Merctech by the way Stevie).

the ticking is normal? i know the 320 c.d.i.'s all tick a little bit but this is like a leaking exhaust sorta noise . it goes away when you first fit the injectors with a new seal but then comes back couple a days later when it blows a bit . its a sorta ticking chuffing noise. you can hear it when you drive beside a wall etc and the sound bounces off . might be made worse by this car's missing some of its under trays :o

Engine trays, engine covers, a few screws here and there, get them all replaced. Then it will be a little quieter. Or reach for the petrol and matches...:D

replaced them before , but as i work in london with all the speed humps and the cars are so low they just get smashed to bits . i will be able to change the gearbox oil soon with out removing the under tray due to a big hole being scraped into it or maybe one day a speed hump will finally remove the box pan  and it will be time for w210 no6 then!

What car do you have?

its a w210 e320 c.d.i. avantgarde . It comes with the standard option of rusty drivers front wing and door corners.

I asked because you can see I have the same albeit an estate. I had my broken front springs replaced 2 weeks ago; no more scraping at the front. I also have the optional steel sump guard which is well rubbed, but the engine and everything else is pristine under there.

you can get a steel sump gaurd? sounds like something i would need :D The springs on mine are fine . I think a lot of it is because its bottoming out due to worn shocks . Ive changed the anti roll bar bushes and drop links this made it bit tighter on twidley roads . i guess shocks next on the list .

get the seats recut.

I have mine booked in next week as it seems that I have 4 leaking - quoted no more than £200
