I recently had my neighbouring garage change the oil on our CLK55AMG. They are a non-specialised garage, but they work on all sorts of cars including the owner's family's AMG's etc.

They thought they had completely drained the oil, going to some lengths to ensure it was all out - making sure the filter housing was open before they drained etc. They then refilled with less than the amount that should fill the sump. Checked the electronic dipstick - said ok.

But then, shortly after, the display flashed red to say the engine oil was over filled. After some scratching of heads, it went to the MB dealer to check - they found nearly 2 litres too much oil inside!

Now, I still have the remnant of the Mobil 1 can here, with about 2 litres left in it - so they only used 8 litres. The engine takes 8.5, yet we still had 2 litres too much??

Has anyone got experience of whether there is a trick to draining these AMG V8's completely? Or has someone started filling with ordinary oil - realised their mistake after 1 jug full and then switched to the Mobil 1 that we obtained specially?

The dry initial capacity figure is always larger than the refill figure, for obvious reasons. The figures in the MB manual for the mid-1990s cars vary between dry and refill from 0.5L to 1.5L for petrol engines and up to 2.5L for some diesel engines.

when the oil was changed in the CLK55, it was sucked out of the sump .. the dipstick is removed, and the probe put right into the end.

refill capacity is 8 litres (2 lots of 4 litre Mobil 1) .. should be the same for your 2009.

It does not take 8.5 litres.

7.6 maximum.

The level must be checked when hot and 5mins after switch off.

Thanks for that. The handbook clearly shows 8.5 litres - which is what we were going by (I've got a scan of the page at home - I'll attach it later). Are you saying 7.6 because of not getting it all drained (as per C240Sport97's post)?

I have seen posts that say some AMG engines have 2 drain plugs as well...

The kompressor engine has two. Yours has one.

All drained it will be a max of 7.6L.

reminds me of a runway sweeper we sent to mercedes for it's donkey engine first service (50hrs) they changed the oil (to maitain warranty on the donkey engine) (yes they can insist, as it is commercial) they didn 't run it, but sent it back saying it had the wrong dipstick fitted, we drained to check, it had 49litres of oil instead of 29, turns out they had sucked it out of the dipstick tube and replaced with the correct quantity without checking how much had been sucked out.
