oil check c270cdi

how do you check the oil on a c class 270cdi
i know it is on the dash but its not letting me do it
and it just says something like pref serv something
so i don't know how to check it now
any help appreciated

Is it asking to be serviced?

What year is the car?

On mine, switch the ignition to position 1 and set the cluster to show total mileage. Then press the trip reset button 3 times quite quickly. It should beep and the cluster display changes to an engineering mode.
Scroll through the pages and one of them has oil ---- at the bottom.
Turn the ign to position 2 and it'll tell you the oil level.

Sounds a palaver but after a few times it's easy.
