Hi Guys

What is acceptable oil consumption for w210 e320 (petrol) please? Mines is a 1998 car and is doing about 4000 miles per litre, has only done 90k miles? I thought my previous car which was the same was doing about 8000 per litre... any views please

MB's general rule seems to be that anything up to 1L per 1000km is acceptable consumption, although it may be different with newer cars. Which oil are you using?

hmmm, good question and the answer is I don't know. The car was "serviced" before I bought it 6 months ago by a small village type garge. Am planning to change the oil again in the next couple of weeks. Have done about 8000 miles in the car to date and it needs another (the second) litre of oil now... any views about which oil is best to put in please?

One meeting or exceeding the specs in the handbook or service book. Personally, I use Mobil 1, bought from Costco at about £25 a tub, in my MBs, two of which have done many more miles than yours has -- which I mention only because there are those who say fully-synthetic oil shouldn't be used in high milers, but I have experienced no problems.

If you don't know what oil is in there, I suppose the safest bet is 10W40 semi-synth, but I suspect that any oil would mix without problems. However, if you've done 8000 miles since the last fill, it's time for a change of oil and filter.

This is but one of dozens of pages on the Web, but Honest John is no fool:

For reference my 1998 CLK with 96k miles has the same engine and burns no oil between services.

Pardon me folks, but how would I measure such thing? is the amount of oil in the engine reduce by using the car? I mean the amount of oil after oil replacement is more than the amount after driving for 3000 km?!!!
I thought the amount was the same
if consumption is 1 L/ 1000 km ,so after 5000 km of driving I won't find any oil in the engine!!!
I live in a very hot climate country,I replace oil and filter every 3000 km in summer and every 5000 km in winter, though winter is very short here, sometimes winter is over and I didn't reach 5000 km yet !!

Instead of topping it up why not just change it now for a decent oil - either mobil 1 from costco or Fuchs oil available on line or from GSF at decent prices. Get a proper genuine MB filter - pennies in the overall scheme of things.
A litre in 4000 miles is a bit higher than my experience but nothing to worry about. You may find it reduces with a decent oil in there.

yes thats right - some engines burn some oil and some don't. Many diesels will burn oil from new and then stop when they have bedded in. A lot will start to burn oil after many miles and then get gradually worse as the wear increases. Regular oil and filter changes will reduce the engine wear and in well maintained petrol engines there may be no oil use at all between changes even in an engine that has covered many miles.
Engine oil and filter changes are the secret to a long engine life; together with not thrashing it to death before it has reached operating temperature.

Neither mine 106k or wifes 75k use any oil at all, neither are on expensive oil just a decent syn oil comma i think.

Old disco i had tried syn oil and it drunk it like a fish, back to mineral and it was okay again.
