... spots of oil have just appeared on my front driveway after a trip to London at the frant and rear ends of the front wheelarches. Any ideas where this might come from.

Going past the Tower of London I hit a large piece of masonry on the road with quite a thump (bloody cowboy builders). Could this have damaged anything?

First thing to establish is whether its engine oil or hydraulic fluid. Take a look at the engine dipstick end, the brake fluid and the power steering reservoirs to get an idea of the colour, viscosity, smell and feel on your fingers of the various fluids. Check the levels while you are at it. Then try and determine which one you have got in the wheel arches. Take a good look round the engine compartment in daylight to see if there are any signs of leaks. Fluids can thrown out to the sides by the fan or poly V belt when the engine is running away from the leak source.
p.s. for peace of mind you really need to get the car up on a ramp ASAP to check for any damage underneath.

    It was black, very black.

Just did a quick visual check, having been for a run locally. No more oil spots, wheelarches are dry and no obvious signs of oil splashing about in the engine bay.

I get exactly the same after having driven on cruddy roads too - spooked me the first time I saw it as well. Do keep an eye on things but in my case at least it turned out to be nothing more than detrius collected from the road dripping off the wheel arches.
