Oil in my inlet maifold

Hi removed the fuel metering head and looked in the inlet manifold and there was about an inch of oil in there was wondering if anyone knows why that would be there

It's from the engine breather. Do you really mean an inch?
 
No more a puddle of oil is this normal or how do I fix it cheers

http://www.w124performance.com/service/w124CD1/Program/Engine/103/01-0400.pdf is a schematic of the engine breather, if it's gunged up oil vapours/mist won't be seperated from crankcase fumes as effectively. Overfilling* the engine with oil can also overcome the crankcase breather and a 'tired' engine will obviously breathe more heavily too.

After mentioning an inch of oil 'a puddle' sounds like a lot... are we talking maybe half a tea spoons worth spread out over an inch or a proper puddle?

* the max mark on the dip stick is an absolute maximum, not a target. Midway between min/max marks is a good target
