Mercedes E 220 diesel estate
Hello,

I've got a 2002, E220 diesel auto estate, and I've just spent the last day and a half lifting the four injectors and reseating them with the thicker (2.4mm) Honda washers, and of course new bolts. As I was putting it back together I noticed that the front of the engine is getting soaked with oil. In particular the front of the alternator, which is on the exhaust side. So now I need to find out exactly where the oil is leaking from.

Any ideas?

I never understood why 'honda seals' are so famous, all my repairs (3x) have been succesfull with mb seals. Besides thicker seal (if injector not seats at same hight) may cause interference with designed spray pattern, even fractions of mm could do the difference...

about the oil leak... exhaust side common sources are breather hoses, turbo hoses, fill cap seal... you need to clean up and then try to figure out where leak is, and is it excessive enough.

mersum1es,

Thanks for the pointers. It does look pretty excessive. I'll take some photos tomorrow and post them up. It's something that's been steadily getting worse over the past few months. It started out as a small puddle of oil in the engine undertray, but it's steadily got worse, and now it's suddenly become a large puddle that's starting to splash onto the underside of the body aft of the engine area. Mind you, it does mean the underside of the body won't go rusty!

mersum1es,

I forgot to say in my last post that I read somewhere the Honda washers are not only thicker, but softer as well, so they squash down and fill the space between the bottom of the injector and the seat face in the cylinder head a little better than the Merc ones.

Regarding the oil leak at the front of the engine. I think I may have solved the mystery. Last year I took the high-pressure fuel pump off to see if it was working properly. It was, but in order to remove it I also had to remove the vacuum pump. I think I damaged the oil seal behind the pump, because it seems that the leak is originating there. I'll check tomorrow by taking it off again to see if it's leaking oil. However, I suspect it is, so I'll seal it with silicone sealant till I can get a new proper rubber sealing ring.
